Maureen Tepedino, The Fisherman, Acrylic on Canvas, 72 X 36

By Henry Long
Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 4/16/18 – The Upper West hosts an opening reception for artist Maureen Tepedino on Sunday April 22nd, 2018, from 4-7pm. The artist will be in attendance. A fan of the restaurant, Tepedino said she is looking forward to seeing her work exhibited on the walls of the upscale restaurant. “I was first introduced to Upper West Restaurant last fall, by a dear friend and was immediately impressed with the ambiance, food and service.”
Tepedino’s love of art started when she was just seven years old. Inspired by her surroundings (Jamaica, W.I), she painted vibrant sunsets and serene subjects. Maureen’s connection to art led her to becoming an interior designer. After studying at Interior Design and Art, and Santa Monica City College, she implemented her love of color into her projects with an exceptional flair.Tepedino also has a background in fashion. For over twenty years, she owned and operated Maureen’s on Main Street, a successful fashion and clothing boutique in Santa Monica.
Like most artists Tepedino visits museums to find inspiration. Vincent Van Gough, and Jackson Pollock are at the top of her list, but she was recently moved by some emerging artists. “I was recently exposed to a body of work by a Local School in the Downtown area and felt that the student’s had great potential to become household names in the Art Industry.”
As an artist she is constantly inspired by her daily life. She describes the impetus to creating one of her works in the show…“Coming from a large family, when I painted Family Gathering, I had so many wonderful memories of all the times we were together as a family, e.g. around the dining table sharing meals, taking walks, and on Sundays where my parents would take us to the Beach and after, my Dad would show us the progress of the Buildings he was working on!”
Another painting entitled The Fisherman was inspired by her childhood. “While living in Toronto, CA as a teenager, I went fishing many times and later on enjoyed taking my two sons along for the experience. Painting “The Fisherman” brought back many happy memories.”
Her paintings are sold nationally by interior designers, art consultants, architects and contractors for high-end residential and corporate projects. She also specializes in corporate art by creating original pieces designed for Commercial spaces.”
The opening artist reception for “Imagination: Art that Speaks to You” will be held on April 22nd, from 4:00-7:00pm. The Upper West Restaurant is located at 3321 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica 90405; 4:00pm – 7:00 pm. http://www.theupperwest.com

New Group Exhibition Opens at Blue 7 Gallery March 18th

March 18th, New Group Exhibition Opens at Blue 7 Gallery

By: Libby Lancaster

The Hollywood Times (Santa Monica, CA) 3/15/2018 –  “Randy and I were just brain storming,” said Lucius Peterson, gallery director.

“Ordinary into Extraordinary,” a group exhibition opens at Blue 7 Gallery on Sunday March 18th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Robert Ball Owner

Owned by Randy Ball, the longtime gallery has evolved into a nurturing collective, hosting shows about ten times a year.

Lucius Peterson Director

“We were intrigued by how artists are inspired by seemingly everyday items – old shoes, a box.” Both Randy Ball (owner) and Lucius Peterson (director) are also artists and will be exhibiting work in the group show as well. In fact, the two collaborated in the production of the “Rose” photo.

Rose, (woven photo) by Randy Ball and Lucius Peterson

Peterson explained, “It is two photographs woven together to produce a single image. I did the photography and Randy did the weaving.” Peterson went on to say both Ball and himself were fond of Lisa Wald’s cow paintings that would be part of the group show. The artist will be exhibiting works that were inspired by a recent visit to animal sanctuary.

“The way Lisa paints her animals provides the viewer with a connection to the subject as if you know the cow,” added Peterson.

“Randy & Lucius are great people to work with,” said artist Lisa Wald, who has been part of the collective since it began. “They are supportive of artists & foster a collaborative environment.”

Lisa Wald, Good Morning, 16 x 20 Oil on Canvas Panel

Although she paints many different types of subjects, she will be exhibiting her animal inspired works for this exhibition.  She continued, “Showing at Blue 7 Gallery has been a fantastic way to share my art with the public in a nurturing environment. It’s also very exciting to see my pieces on a gallery wall. I’m always impressed by the other artists’ work & their points of view.” http://www.lisawald.net

Special guest artist Ray Ford will be included in the group exhibition as well. A talented wood sculptor, Ford takes pride in the fact that each of his works of art is completely original.

The wood sculpture of Ray Ford

He is a dedicated artist still at 90 years old. He continues to create work almost every day and exhibits in local galleries. His work has been shown at Ivan Gallery, the Santa Monica Art Studios, Fab-Gallery and more.

Like most artists, he has worked in all types of mediums. Wood carving was his first love and he has stayed true to it all these years, continuing to produce incredible one-of-a-kind artworks. He has done quite a bit of drawing and painting as well. His work is figurative in style. He explained, when modern art became all the rage, he was not a fan of abstract art. But…he added “I learned to appreciate it.” http://hrayford.com/

Vicki Fisher-Lerer, Encaustic by the Sea, Encaustic paint, 12 x 24

Artist Vicki Fisher-Lerer has been part of the collective since early on. She will be exhibiting her encaustic paintings. The word encaustic originates from the Greek word enkaustikos, which means to burn in. The artist explained, “Each layer you paint needs to be fused with a heat gun or a torch. Encaustic paintings are perhaps the most durable form of painting, some surviving over 2000 years without cracking, flaking or fading. An example is the Faiyum mummy portraits in Egypt.” http://vickifisher-lerer.blogspot.com/

Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression Art & Music Festival

This Saturday, October 14th, the Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression Art & Music Festival is back in the newly renovated LA State Historic Park in downtown LA.

This is the 13th year for the extravagant festival which was originally created as a way for the Burning Man community to “decompress” coming back from the desert event. It has also become a place where newcomers can take an inside look into a Burner experience.

LADecomCityscape-photocourtesyofLABMDecom

The public can expect an unprecedented event. One of the guidelines of Burning Man is inclusiveness to everyone….so newcomers are welcomed. Participating artists will show unconventional and inventive art installations.

Producer and longtime Burner, Esquire Jauchem said, “After three years of waiting for the wonderful new DTLA Historic Park to be completed, LA Burning Man is thrilled to bring the Decom Art & Music Festival back to fiery, fantastic life.”

The public will enjoy four stages. One is called the Ignite Fire Stage and will feature fire performances. The second one is the Charlie the Unicorn stage. where the famed Diva Danielle will be spinning along with Todd Spero, Jacob Kalski, Fleetwood Smack, Erik Nelson, Somekindaweirdo, and Philip Evans.

The third stage is called the Art Car Bus Stop, and finally, Subtract Music runs the fourth stage featuring DJs, Anton Tumas, Brad Moontribe, Deltavox, Isaiah Martin, Joe P., Loboman, Massio, Patricio, Synchronometry, and Zach Walker.

Marialyce Pedersen will be hosting the Merry Mad Tea Party at this year’s Decom event. Her nickname is Merry M’Alyce in Burnerland. Serving hot and cold teas and engaging people is part of the fun. “I like the smallness and intimacy,” said Pedersen. I like that people can actually meet and interact and have meaningful exchanges. I like that people who don’t have time, money, or the inclination to travel all the way to Black Rock City can attend Decom and get a little annual taste of the thing.” This will be the Merry Mad Tea Party’s 5th appearance at LA Decom. It debuted at the 2012 event.

Dave Taylor will collaborate with Debi Cable 3D to create Destiny Lounge 3D.Taylor said he loves how these events bring out such creative energy in people. “We can be as quirky or weird as we want, create characters, alter egos, whatever! Discovering the crazy things others have come up with is a completely magical experience, and I was hooked from my first Burn!”

In addition to artistic camps in which the public can participate, art cars and mutant vehicles will also be on view at the festival. Vehicles have been transformed into large animals, caterpillars, and alien type cars. Some are huge sculptures…each with its own special feature, such as fire, music, etc.  Jauchem added, “The LA Burning Man Decom Art & Music Festival is truly like a mini Burning Man (without the dust!).”

Through September 25, 2017
John McLaughlin (1898-1976) is acknowledged as one of the most important artists of the post-war period. Working in Southern California, by 1948 he had pioneered a distinctive style of “Western geometric abstraction.”
Inspired by his lifelong study of Asian art, he instilled in his art a sense of stillness and the Japanese notion of the void. Between 1962 and 1963, McLaughlin made prints at Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, on view now are the entire group of seventeen prints that he produced at Tamarind.

Upper West and Bobbie Rich

Upper West presents a solo exhibition by Bobbie Rich on Sunday, July 30th, 2017. Bobbie Rich said she always knew she was supposed to create art. “Life is better when you embrace your gifts, but that doesn’t mean everything is easy. Although incredibly rewarding, being an artist isn’t exactly the most dependable career path. I am very proud to be a successful artist.”

Rich will enjoy her second solo exhibition at Santa Monica restaurant Upper West. “I’m very excited for the July 30th opening bash and to be spending much more time at such a delicious and beautiful restaurant!” The exhibition entitled “Wanderlust” will feature over twenty works. Rich went on to explain that during the summer her teaching schedule lightens up so she has more time to paint and work on her own personal projects. “It’s been really wonderful working on my balcony to finish up new works for Upper West. Several have sold, fresh off the easel, so I am really focused on completing new large works to adorn the restaurant.”

Rich is a consistent patron of the restaurant…”Upper West has the best Happy Hour around! A few of my favorite options are the Braised Brisket Tacos, the Crispy Glazed Chicken and the Thai Peanut Noodles.”

Rich often gives her time helping nonprofits. She recently did some live painting for Harvest Home’s Gala at the Fairmont Miramar. Her painting was live auctioned in the ballroom as the grand finale of the evening for $6000, with 100% donated to Harvest Home. Harvest Home transforms the lives of homeless pregnant women and their children by providing housing, support, and programs that equip women to become great mothers.

She was also commissioned by Herman Miller to create a mural. Since she works teaching for Family Art and Art Camp for Community Corp of Santa Monica and the Boys and Girls Club of America at several affordable housing locations, she was able to connect the furniture store with the CCSM and Boys and Girls Club. She personally collaborated with the kids and Herman Miller employees to create a beautiful under the sea mural at 430 Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica. “I designed and drew an enormous paint-by-number before the Herman Miller team and Boys and Girls Club kids arrived. All the paints were pre-mixed. Paint swatches were on the walls.  Everyone was assigned a color and away we went!”

When asked which artists inspire her these days, she replied, “My students are the emerging artists that most inspire me. I give them enough free reign to test and express their own ideas, while learning all the fundamentals and beyond. Each day is a surprise and I always soak in all the treasures they create.”

Meet Bobbie Rich at Upper West Restaurant (3321 Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica) on Sunday, July 30th from 4-7pm. www.BobbieRich.comhttp://www.theupperwest.com/

“Education is not a Crime”: words that sparked a human rights campaign and inspired mural artists all over the world to shine a light on the persecution of the Bahá’í faith in Iran.

By Elizabeth Carbe’

Santa Clarita, CA (The Hollywood Times) 6/14/17 – “Changing the World, One Wall at a Time” is a new documentary feature film produced by Iranian Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari and his team – the film continues in the footsteps of the movement that started in 2015 with Bahari’s film “To Light a Candle”.  An array of street artists have executed a new abstract vision of oppression and emancipation, with murals spread out from South Africa to Brazil and France to North America. These works also reflect the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Bahari’s film focuses on the active suppression of education. What started as a Human Rights Campaign in New York has now grown to 41 murals painted by artists all over the world. By JP Durand

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 6/12/17 – The extent to which the Beatles continue to capture the world’s imagination, now 47 years since their breakup, is staggering.  Every so often a new remixed CD (as with the current 2017 audio upgrade of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”), a new book or a new piece of film present the tantalizing opportunity to put the Fab Four squarely in one’s mind and heart, to again examine their legacy and provide a new perspective on perhaps the world’s most beloved and most analyzed band. “Since then, the Frost Art Museum FIU has served as a cultural beacon for four decades, bringing new cultural experiences to generations of art lovers, students, patrons and visitors from all over the world,” adds Pomeroy.  The art museum’s patrons, Patricia & Phillip Frost, joined Dr. Pomeroy in honoring Dennis Scholl alongside Dr. Kenneth Furton (FIU’s Provost), and Daniel Perron (the museum’s Board Chair).

The Scholls invited guests on a personal tour of the exhibition Marking the Infinite: Contemporary Women Artists from Aboriginal Australia drawn from their own collection, which will continue its national tour after headlining at the Frost Art Museum FIU.

About the Museum

One of the largest free-standing art museums in Florida, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University was founded in 1977 and is the Smithsonian Affiliate in Miami.

The museum’s new lakeside building debuted in 2008, designed by Yann Weymouth (the chief of design on the I.M. Pei Grand Louvre Project).

With 46,000 square feet of energy efficient exhibition, storage, and programming space, the museum was honored with LEED silver certification. The museum’s mission is three-fold: to be a campus resource for the entire FIU community; to offer interdisciplinary training in the arts for the next generation of artists and art historians; and to serve as a premier cultural destination for the residents of Miami, and the 15 million visitors to one of the world’s most vibrant cultural destinations – home to global cultural events including Art Basel.

The Frost offers programming that complements its exhibitions with a wide range of educational initiatives. The Steven and Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series has featured internationally renowned speakers including: Laurie Anderson, Christo, Susan Sontag, Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, John Cage and Marina Abramović. The Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery serves as an innovative programming space that encourages children’s involvement in art through hands-on exploration.

Admission to the museum is always free. The Frost Art Museum FIU is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and is located on the campus of Florida International University at 10975 SW 17 Street. Artists Stephanie Visser and Hunt Rettig to be Celebrated May 13th at FP Contemporary

Stephanie B, 3/22/11, 10:26 AM, 8C, 8928×11886 (0+113), 150%, Custom, 1/30 s, R38.9, G30.0, B42.3

Patty Tedesco

When asked what inspires Stephanie Visser to create her abstract works of art, Visser reveals that her paintings are born from deep intimate moments. Her non-pictorial abstract works

are shadowed by her own perception of life and all that it encompasses. Each work was inspired by different situation. Visser recounts what prompted her to create the above work, entitled Perseus, “Some time ago, I’ve read that astronomers in England had detected a sound, a single note really, emitted by the black hole in the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster. Immediately, I saw the image of this solitary cosmic denizen calling through all of eternity like some giant space whale. That image has since stuck with me and given visible form to feelings of loss and sadness.” Continue reading “Artists Stephanie Visser and Hunt Rettig to be Celebrated May 13th at FP Contemporary”
