What Is Relay For Life?
Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.
Organized, overnight community fundraising walk
Teams of people camp out around a track
Members of each team take turns walking around the track
Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie
Family-friendly environment for the entire community
Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. But it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave!

Survivors Lap
During the Survivors Lap, all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. Relay For Life events also recognize and celebrate caregivers, who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer.
Luminaria Ceremony
The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark, so we can remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those whose fight continues. Candles are lit inside of personalized bags and are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer

History of Relay For Life
In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He decided to personally raise money for the fight against cancer by doing something he enjoyed—running marathons.
In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends donated $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course.
While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Months later he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.
In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team relay event on the track at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield.
The vision turned into over 5,200 Relay For Life events across the United States today and nearly $5 billion in fundraising to save lives from cancer. In addition, the American Cancer Society licenses twenty non-governmental cancer organizations in other countries to hold Relay For Life events to battle cancer across the globe.
For 28 years, Relay For Life has provided inspiration and hope for millions of cancer survivors and caregivers.

LOS ANGELES, June 26, 2014 – The Hollywood Museum unveils its new exhibit, “100 Years of Hal Roach Studios: Laurel & Hardy, ‘Our Gang’ and Harold Lloyd” in honor of the Hollywood icon’s centennial, opening to the public from July 5 to August 31. The exhibit contains authentic photos, costumes and props from the rich history of Hal Roach Studios and the legendary talents that emanated from there in the early 1900s.Sons of the Desert, the official International Laurel & Hardy Society, is co-sponsoring the exhibition in conjunction with their national convention, held July 2 to July 6 in the heart of Hollywood. The Hollywood Museum in the Historic Max Factor Building is located at 1660 N. Highland Ave. at Hollywood and Highland.

“We are so pleased to honor the 100th anniversary of the Hal Roach Studios with this special exhibit,” states Donelle Dadigan, Founder and President of the Museum. “Everyone remembers the celebrated comedy team Laurel & Hardy who made famous the phrase ‘Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into,’ the legendary appeal of ‘Our Gang’ and their famous dog Pete the Pup, and actor Harold Lloyd, one of the most famous and influential comedians of the great silent film era.”

Hal Roach’s life itself was as colorful as anything ever portrayed on film. In addition to Laurel & Hardy, Hal Roach Studios brought to fame such actors as Harold Lloyd, the‘Our Gang’ kids (later known as The Little Rascals or Hal Roach’s Rascals), bombshell actress Thelma Todd, Zasu Pitts and Charley Chase. Other performers who graduated from Roach comedies on their path to stardom were such actors as Jean Harlow, Janet Gaynor, Jean Arthur, Fay Wray, Paulette Goddard and Boris Karloff.

Roach’s 1939 film version of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men was possibly his greatest masterpiece, while One Million B.C. was notable for his collaboration with D.W. Griffith. Roach’s foray into the genre of screwball comedies created such diverting features as Turnabout and Merrily We Live, while his fast and lively swashbucklers included Captain Fury and Captain Caution. John Wayne, Buster Keaton and John Ford were among the many big name stars and directors who worked on Roach’s television shows.

Objects pertaining to Hal Roach include his honorary 1984 Oscar® and a Hal Roach Studios camera, while Harold Lloyd items include his makeup case and glasses and rare film posters and photos.

Also featured in the exhibit are Laurel & Hardy costumes including suits worn in the 1945 film The Bull Fighters, coats worn in Jitterbugs (1943), the iconic Fez’s worn inSons of the Desert (1933), Stan Laurel’s personal favorite Fedora, as well as props from Sons of the Desert and a flask from The Fighting Kentuckian (1949). A plaque from Lake Laurel & Hardy Fishing Lakes (in Marietta, S.C.) includes its mysterious history offered by the City of Los Angeles archives. Additional Laurel & Hardy ephemeras consist of film posters, rare photographs, scripts, sheet music, scrapbooks, personal photos and letters and Al Hirschfield-designed window cards.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were solo performers who were cast separately in silent films, but within a year after they were fortuitously paired together at the Hal Roach Studios in 1926, they were being touted as the best new comedy team. After working together on silent films and transitioning to “talkies,” their success spread around the world, and they began making feature films, winning an Oscar® for their film short The Music Box (1932).

Sons of the Desert Society is named after the 1933 feature film,” said the organization’s president, Bob Satterfield, and “is devoted to keeping the lives and works of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy before the public, with the strong desire to perpetuate their spirit and genius.” Each local chapter of the society is called a “tent” and is named after a Laurel & Hardy film, with “tents” located all over the United States and many foreign countries.

“One will get chills seeing the many treasures of this exhibit in person,” comments Satterfield. “Observing the Academy Award® presented to Hal Roach for his lifetime of achievement, the recently uncovered Lake Laurel & Hardy Plaque from the Hal Roach Studios and Harold Lloyd’s personal belongings is a dream come true for fans of this era!”

Contributors to this exhibit include Dan Bacher, Richard Bann, Maria Carpenter, William Cassara, Amy Condit, Brad Farrell, Rick Greene, Richard Johnson, Chuck McCann, Mike and Carol Nemeth, Dave and Diane Reidy, Tyler St. Mark, Bob Satterfield, Cliff Sawyer and Randy Skretvedt.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

June 27, 2014

LOS ANGELES, CA – Composers Gustavo Dudamel, Gustavo Santaolalla and John Williams will gather at the Academy for “Behind the Score: The Art of the Film Composer,” on Monday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater in Los Angeles.  In a conversation hosted by Tavis Smiley, the illustrious trio will discuss significant musical moments in film that have inspired their work as they examine the art and process of creating a film score as well as the director-composer collaboration.

Dudamel, now entering his sixth season as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, made his first foray into composing for motion pictures with “THE LIBERATOR (Libertador),” a biopic about Simón Bolívar that screened at the Los Angeles Film Festival earlier this month.  The score for this film, as well as a CD on Deutsche Grammophon, was recorded with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, of which Dudamel is music director.  Dudamel also appears as a guest conductor with many of the world’s greatest musical institutions.

A renowned singer, guitarist, music producer and composer, Santaolalla earned consecutive Oscars® for Original Score for “Brokeback Mountain” and “Babel.”  His other feature credits include “Amores Perros,” “21 Grams,” “The Motorcycle Diaries,” “North Country,” “Biutiful” and “On the Road.”  Long before he won the first of his 16 Grammy® Awards, Santaolalla was a creative force in the Argentine rock nacional movement in the early 1970s.

Williams, whose career spans six decades, has written scores for more than 100 films, including “Lincoln,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” the first three “Harry Potter” films,  the “Indiana Jones” films, and “The Book Thief,” and has won Academy Awards® for five films: “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “Schindler’s List.”  With 49 Oscar® nominations, he holds the nominations record for any living person.

Smiley is currently the host of the late-night television talk show Tavis Smiley on PBS and the weekly radio broadcast “The Tavis Smiley Show” from Public Radio International.  He also has authored or co-authored 16 books, including his forthcoming Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year to be published this September.

Behind the Score: The Art of the Film Composer is supported by The New York Times, a founding supporter of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, scheduled to open in Los Angeles in 2017.

Tickets for Behind the Score are $5 for general admission and $3 for Academy members, LACMA Film Club members and students with a valid ID.  Tickets may be purchased online at  The Bing Theater is located at 5905 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.  For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or visit

Linda Perry: American Idol contestants “not special enough”

Linda Perry Gets Real About
‘American Idol’

Legendary singer-songwriter Linda Perry joins Larry King on “Larry King Now” tomorrow, June 26th at 5 pm ET to discuss her Grammy awards and nominations, her process when it comes to songwriting, to set the record straight on her feud with Pink, and what its like writing hit songs for many artists like Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion, and Faith Hill.

Here’s an advanced preview of the interview: in this short clip, Linda Perry explains her frustration with American Idol — that the show is fixed and fake and does not “find” true talent.

“My process of songwriting comes from a very real place, a place that when you watch American Idol – God bless it – it’s probably an awesome experience that these people are having – but its not a real one,” said Linda Perry.

“Those kids that are on that show would never, would NEVER be found out by a label. A label would never go ‘I want that kid’ – you know – they’re not special enough…they’re singing cover songs, they’re not real musicians. They’re more being put out on the show because this person seems a little f*cked up so they’re gonna be good for tv, that person we know we’re gonna dump them in the second episode, and you know it’s already planned out to who the winner is.”

Her opinion on corporate sponsors also fits into her judgement of American Idol and other singing competition shows: “Is it really about music or is it about selling coca-cola? Is it about the judges and their million dollar paychecks? What are these f*cking shows actually about? Because what its not about – is about music.”

Winner Will Be Chosen by the Public and Receive $50,000 to Fund Their Dream Expedition;
Contest Now Open at
(WASHINGTON, D.C. — June 24, 2014) Move over, Indiana Jones. It’s a new day in exploration. National Geographic Channel (NGC) today announced Expedition Granted, a socially fueled competition to find the next generation of explorers and to grant one person’s dream expedition for $50,000. The nationwide competition was developed in partnership with National Geographic Society, 21st Century FOX and sponsors the Jeep brand and Dos Equis.
Expedition Granted aims to democratize the very notion of exploration and show that in the 21st century, explorers can come from all backgrounds and disciplines ranging from art and music to food, science and technology. The only requirement is that one has unbridled curiosity and is willing — with a little financial help — to take the steps to make their dream project happen.
“We want to help redefine the concept of exploration — anyone with a big idea and passion to make it come to life can be an explorer,” said NGC CEO Courteney Monroe. “This opportunity is for all of those pushing boundaries and forging new paths — a musician who is changing how music is composed using only a smartphone, an engineer developing robotics to aid people with impaired mobility, or a chef who is pushing the boundaries of food preparation — there is no limit to what we want to see.”
Brain Games host Jason Silva (@JasonSilva), National Geographic Channel’s voice of redefining exploration and curiosity through his hit series, will be introducing the contest to fans and working with National Geographic and their team to determine the finalists.
To enter, contestants must submit a video up to two minutes in length and a Tweetable elevator pitch outlining what their passion project is and why they deserve to have it granted. Submissions will be accepted until August 31, 2014 (entrants must be 21 years or older). Once an entry is submitted, it will be displayed on the main site where fans can show support for the project they’d most like to see granted by liking and sharing on social media.
When the submission period closes, National Geographic Channel, together with its partners and advisors, will choose up to 10 finalists to be voted on by the public. Finalists will be selected based on their project’s originality, ability to make an impact on the local and/or global community and viability. A winner will be announced later this fall and, in addition to the $50,000 prize, will be highlighted on-air on NGC.
Contestants will be inspired and encouraged along the way by a council of notable experts across a wide range of specialties: art, food, social sciences, technology, filmmaking, journalism, engineering, the environment and more. The advisors include:

Watch “They Yard Goes To the Irishman” on YouTube

Summertime is here yet almost everyday is summertime in Southern California especially along the beautiful beaches. One special new Irish pub that has visited is The Irishman Bar and Lounge in Huntington Beach at the corner of 5th and Olive across from the Surf Museum. It is a little cozy slice of the CaliforniaIrishOC lifestyle with Irish surfer owner Ray Hartnett from Cork, Ireland who is a third generation Irish pub owner. The pub was remodeled by local Irishmen who installed the fireplace and whiskey barrel tables. The staff is local California female bartenders with Ray at the helm. The Irishman has a small menu which is popular with his loyal customers.

Press is coming to check out this bit of Ireland in HB and local HB drummer Jason Stout of The Galway Hooker band brought out his camera man to film his latest segment of his show THE YARD. It is an informative 10 minutes of Ray’s history in the OC and a tour of his pub. Enjoy. Slainte!

-The 27th Annual Shark Week Kicks Off August 10-

(Silver Spring, MD) SHARK WEEK, television’s longest running must-see summer TV event, returns to Discovery Channel on Sunday, August 10. Building upon last year’s 11 shark-filled specials, a whopping 13 SHARK WEEK shows coupled with a live talk show each night gives this year’s SHARK WEEK the most premiere hours ever featured in the event’s 27-year history.

SHARK WEEK’s late-night live talk show, Shark After Dark, will return. Host Josh Wolf will lead viewers through an hour-long celebration of all things shark-related, including celebrity guests and shark experts. The talk show will give viewers the opportunity to interact live on-air every night with tweets, questions to celebrity guests, and more.

Hawaii is thought of as an idyllic vacation destination, but recent spikes in shark attacks are turning these shores into a shark hot spot. Hawaiian native and surf legend Kala Alexander knows these waters better than anyone, and he hopes to uncover the reason behind this sudden shark invasion in Sharkageddon.

Lair of the Mega Shark follows famed shark experts Jeff Kerr and Andy Cassagrande head to New Zealand on a life-or-death mission to investigate the sightings of a 20 foot Great White that resembles the  legend of a giant great white shark Maoris call the “lord of the sharks.” Jeff and Andy will risk everything to track down this Mega Shark believed to be lurking in the shadows of the New Zealand coast line.

Zombie Sharks explores tonic immobility, a catatonic zombie-like state that can be achieved in sharks. This shark phenomenon has been studied by scientists for years, but a recent spike in orca whale attacks on great white sharks suggests that orcas have now learned how to immobilize and prey on great whites. Professional diver Eli Martinez looks to prove this theory by being the first person to induce underwater tonic immobility in a massive great white shark.

In Alien Sharks: Return to the Abyss, shark researcher Paul Clerkin heads to the Indian Ocean to investigate the ocean’s darkest depths in search of shark species that scientists never even knew existed and get a glimpse of the last known group of bioluminescent sharks in the world.

Monster Hammerhead explores a legendary hammerhead shark that has been patrolling Florida’s shores for the past 60 years.  Now, a team of scientists and anglers look to explore the mystery and find out if the legend could be real.

Dr. Michael Domeier has spent years scouring the Pacific Ocean hoping to solve one of the greatest mysteries of shark science: the location of great white pupping grounds.  In 2013, he set the process in motion by successfully tagging a pregnant female shark that he called Gil Rakers. Now he’s returning to the sea in Spawn of Jaws 2: The Birth to follow her journey and be the first to capture the birth of a baby great white shark.

Great White Matrix features legendary shark attack survivor Paul de Gelder and cameraman Andy Casagrande on an expedition into the deadly shark infested waters of Australia. Their mission is to investigate a series of bizarre shark attacks in an area swarming with great white sharks. Paul and Andy explore what’s bringing these great whites so close to shore and what’s responsible for the surge in attacks in this area.

Air Jaws programming has pushed and expanded our understanding of great white sharks and has become one of the iconic SHARK WEEK programs. In Air Jaws: Quest for Colossus (WT) Natural History producer Jeff Kurr and his team return using incredible new cameras and high tech underwater gadgetry to track down the missing “mega-shark” named Colossus.

In Jaws Strikes Back, marine biologist Greg Skomal and the sharkcam team travel to the remote Pacific island of Guadalupe, home to some of the largest great white sharks on earth, to film an epic clash of the titans. Their mission: to film Jaws hunt two-ton mega seals.

I Escaped Jaws 2 is a shark special featuring attack stories told from the perspective of the survivor. Using first person interviews and actual footage of the attacks, we take a look at why the attacks occurred and how the victims narrowly escaped with their lives.

Shark of Darkness: Submarine Returns (WT) explores the legend of “Submarine,” an enormous great white shark off the coast of South Africa. This 30-foot shark is said to be the largest great white shark of all time. Locals believe that this shark is responsible for countless fatal attacks, but its existence has never been proven. This documentary explores the evidence and asks the question: can Submarine exist?

In April 2013, a fishing vessel off the coast of South Africa was attacked, killing all on board. A TV crew documented Marine Biologist Collin Drake as he worked to determine the predator responsible. Megalodon: The New Evidence presents SHARK WEEK viewers with shocking new evidence and interview footage.

SHARK WEEK shows no signs of slowing down. SHARK WEEK 2013 was the most-watched SHARK WEEK in the event’s 26 year history across all key demos including Persons, Men and Women 25-54/18-49/18-34 delivery*. SHARK WEEK’s first-ever late-night talk show, Shark After Dark, out-delivered every late-night cable talk show competitor in both Persons 25-54 and 18-49 delivery. Shark After Dark also beat its late-night cable talk show competition among the coveted Persons 18-34 demo**. During the calendar week from August 5-11, Discovery Channel ranked as the #1 network in all of television among Men 18-49 delivery, no exclusions***. SHARK WEEK 2013 on Discovery Channel was watched by 53.169 million viewers (P2+), of which 26.387 million were persons aged 25-54 years old****.

Nearly all of Discovery’s affiliate partners are participating in promotion around SHARK WEEK with advanced screenings, sneak peeks, sweepstakes, social promotions and a robust Video On Demand slate. Details include screenings and family day events at city aquariums and museums and cross channel spots in multiple markets nationwide.

Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-based digital content and professional development for K-12, brings the science of sharks to students around the world with the launch of Sharks, an innovative content collection available year-round through Discovery Education Streaming.  Students will have a front-row seat to Discovery’s finest shark-infested content and learning resources. With engaging K-12 multimedia and lesson plans, the collection offers teachers and students an opportunity to learn more about nature’s most feared—and often misunderstood—predators.  Additionally, students can take a deep dive with recent SHARK WEEK classics available through the award-winning Discovery Education Science Techbook™, such as Great White Highway, Into the Shark Bite, and Top Ten Sharkdown. Discovery Education services are available in over half of all U.S. schools and primary schools in England, community colleges, and in 50 countries around the world.

Following SHARK WEEK 2013’s buzz-worthy performance, with 2.6 million Tweets, 11 Worldwide and 15 U.S. Trending Topics on Twitter and SHARK WEEK trending on Facebook, fin-atics will have even more to dive into online this year. is the hub for all the action, including jawesome photos, engaging videos and additional multiplatform features to be unveiled later this summer. The ever-popular Shark Cam is getting even more bite and will feature more than ten cams with incredible footage from great white hot spots off the coasts of Cape Cod, South Africa and Australia, as well as photos, videos and other interactive elements. Meanwhile, Snuffy the Seal, is alive and well on Facebook (SnuffyTheSeal) and Twitter (@SnuffyTheSeal) where fans can enjoy #SnuffySelfies from the Shark Week hero, and everyone can ensure they don’t miss out on any Shark Week fun on Facebook (SharkWeek), Twitter (@SharkWeek), Instagram (SharkWeek) and the newly-launched SharkWeekTV on Snapchat.

SHARK WEEK will partner for the first time with Ghost Fishing this year, a non-profit organization that collects, motivates and initiates ‘ghost fishing’ projects around the globe. Derelict fishing gear, sometimes referred to as “ghost gear” or “ghost nets” is any discarded, lost, or abandoned, fishing gear in the environment. This gear continues to fish and trap animals, entangle and potentially kill marine life, smother habitats, and act as a hazard to navigation. Ghost Fishing is a network of experienced and well-trained divers, who remove marine debris and make the problem called ghost fishing visible to a worldwide audience.

SHARK WEEK will partner again with One World One Ocean, a for-purpose, multi‐platform media campaign that is harnessing the power of film, television and new media to generate greater global awareness of the ocean’s importance to society. Additionally, Discovery will again partner with Oceana through multi-platform content and public service announcements. Oceana is the largest international non-profit group working solely to protect the world’s oceans and wins policy victories for the oceans using science-based campaigns. Since 2001, they have protected over 1.2 million square miles of ocean and innumerable sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and other sea creatures.

Starting July 1, Toys “R” Us will debut a SHARK WEEK display featuring a wide assortment of shark products including custom great white and harbor seal plush toys as well as a SHARK WEEK lunch kit. Fans can also order must-have Shark Week gear at, featuring SHARK WEEK themed t-shirts, drinkware, bottle openers, books and more.
