Mark your calendars for these two film festivals. Irish Screen America is a bi-coastal film and media festival that showcases some of the best new films from Ireland each year in Los Angeles and New York.
The festival will run from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th of September at the Aero Cinematheque in Los Angeles and Friday 29th September to Sunday 1st of October at NYU’s Cantor Film Center in New York.
Adapted from the 2008 award-winning novel by Sebastian Barry, the latest film from director Jim Sheridan, The Secret Scripture will open the 2017 edition of Irish Screen America.
The Secret Scripture is the hidden memoir of Roseanne McNulty, played by Vanessa Redgrave, confined to a Roscommon mental hospital for fifty years, and revealing the history of her passionate yet tortured life, and of the religious and political upheavals in Ireland during the 1920s and ’30s.
As well as the Oscar-winning Redgrave, the film stars Rooney Mara (A Ghost Story, Carol), rising star Jack Reynor (Free Fire, Sing Street), and Aidan Turner (Poldark, The Tudors). Eric Bana and Theo James also star. The Secret Scripture is a powerful story of love, loss, and belated redemption.
Director of Irish Screen America, Niall McKay said: “It is our pleasure to welcome back Jim Sheridan, the original pioneer of Irish cinema in the U.S., to our festival which strives to showcase all of the talent that exists in the trail which he blazed.”
Irish Screen America supports and guides Irish media-makers by showcasing their work and fostering partnerships in the two largest cities for the entertainment industry in the United States – New York and Los Angeles. The festival hosts screenings, industry panels, discussions and masterclasses.
The full line-up for both the Los Angeles and New York legs of the Irish Screen America festival will be revealed at a launch party at 62 Merrion Square in Dublin on Monday, September 4th at 5:30pm.
The Secret Scripture premieres on Thursday, September 21st at 7:30pm in The Linwood Dunn Theater, at the Academy’s Pickford Center in Los Angeles and on Friday, September 29th at 7:30pm at the NYU Cantor Film Center in New York. EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW
Making it Modern
Palm Springs Art Museum, Clayes Wing
Enjoy a reinstallation of the museum’s foundational collection of works by international modern artists in Europe and the Americas. The exhibition is organized around six key principles that demonstrate how modernists pioneered a new aesthetic language that defined shifting perspectives in the twentieth century. By reconfiguring concepts such as line, energy, aggregates, biomorphism, spirituality, and presence, artists imbued their work with ideas that propelled modernism forward.
Taking their creative counterparts as inspiration, the featured photographers turn artists into subjects. Portraits by Richard Avedon (John Ford), Eve Arnold (Orson Wells), Yousuf Karsh (Jean Sibelius), and Lewis Morley (Sarah Lucas) encapsulate both the photographer’s signature style and the subject’s public persona and underscore the interwoven relationship between muse and maker. Other images include those by Rena Small (Julius Shulman and Alexis Smith), Reed Massengill (David Zurek), Kurt Fishback (Mary Ellen Mark), Ira Nowinski (Man Ray), Lynn Hershman (Roberta), and Dora Maar (Jacqueline Lamba).
John McLaughlin (1898-1976) is acknowledged as one of the most important artists of the post-war period. Working in Southern California, by 1948 he had pioneered a distinctive style of “Western geometric abstraction.”
Inspired by his lifelong study of Asian art, he instilled in his art a sense of stillness and the Japanese notion of the void. Between 1962 and 1963, McLaughlin made prints at Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, on view now are the entire group of seventeen prints that he produced at Tamarind.
Palm Springs Art Museum is a proud partner of Modernism Week. In October, Modernism Week hosts the “Fall Preview” weekend (October 19-22) and partner organizations collaborate to produce a “mini-Modernism Week” to kick-off the active social and recreational season in Palm Springs.

Yesterday, Bethenny Frankel raised and donated a total of $50,000 to Dress for Success Corpus Christi and Dress for Success Houston to assist women in crisis in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
100 percent of the proceeds will go directly to help women and their families in financial crisis and supply them with needed goods.
The funds, along with future funds raised daily by Bethenny and B Strong, will allow Dress for Success Corpus Christi to eventually repair its location and continue to serve women in their local community after being damaged by Hurricane Harvey.
As an extension of Bethenny’s B Strong initiative, the donations made to Dress for Success Houston will help 900 Professional Women’s Group members overcome the financial crises they will face in the wake of this historic storm.
Both affiliates are exploring other means for helping the thousands of women who will be struggling to rebuild their lives, and Bethenny’s contribution will provide these organizations with the tools and supplies necessary to expand this reach.
B Strong: Find Your Yes is a crisis intervention initiative that provides real-time emergency assistance to women who face crises on their road to success. It’s for women in abusive situations, women at a crossroads and women in dire straits financially. It’s all about helping these women get the tools they need to manage the situation and achieve the best outcome possible.
Bethenny is continuing B Strong’s drive to raise funds and needed supplies to be distributed to women in need in the Houston area next week. The star is providing updates on all of her social channels, including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Get Loud is fronted by campaign ambassador Claudia Winkleman, and supported by artists Jake Bugg, Anne-Marie, Level 42, 67 and Youngr – who will be performing a series of exclusive gigs around the UK on 13 September.
Stars who are pledging their support for the campaign and performing the exclusive gigs that evening are:
Jake Bugg – 100 Club, London
Anne-Marie at Omeara, London

These unique performances are just £15 a ticket, and all profits directly fund the delivery of Nordoff Robbins’ music therapy services around the UK.
Jake Bugg’s session at the 100 Club will also be in support of Grenfell Tower and all those affected. Nordoff Robbins have been working outside the Notting Hill Methodist Church, offering free music therapy to those whose lives have been impacted by the tragedy, and ensuring support to anyone who needs our help. Profits raised from Jake’s session will go towards ensuring that we can continue our work there in the local community.
Claudia said: “I am so proud to be supporting Get Loud for Nordoff Robbins. It is an amazing charity that uses music to change the lives of so many people. There are lots of ways you can Get Loud for Nordoff Robbins this year, so join us and do what you can to help this brilliant charity reach more people who desperately need their help.”
Get Loud is sponsored by energy company SSE. As a Founding Partner, SSE offer crucial funding, knowledge and expertise to support Get Loud, in its aim to boost awareness of Nordoff Robbins across the UK, and support the charity’s regional expansion.
Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship and Reward at SSE, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting Get Loud for a second year running. We have seen the amazing impact this charity’s music therapy can have on so many lives and that is why we are behind Get Loud. It will help the charity to gain invaluable support and fund their life-changing music therapy to help many more people and we at SSE are very excited to play our part in helping to make Get Loud happen.”

Caffè Nero will also be partnering with Get Loud, and hosting in-store acoustic performances dubbed ‘Coffee Shop Sessions’ on the same day. Set to feature some of the best up-and-coming talent around, these sessions will take place at midday on 13 September, and will offer all Caffe Nero customers an opportunity to support Nordoff Robbins through a donation.
Paul Ettinger, Business Development Director at Caffe Nero says, “As an organisation that supports musicianship through our own in-store music programme, we feel a very strong synergy with the Get Loud campaign, and are committed to helping Nordoff Robbins ensure that music therapy is available to all those who need it.
Get Loud is an ambitious campaign, and we at Caffe Nero are matching that ambition in what we have planned! On the 13th September we will be giving a platform to hundreds of talented, unsigned artists who will perform simultaneously in our stores right across the UK. It is the first time we have hosted sessions on this scale, so it will be a real highlight for us that will make a huge amount of noise for Get Loud.”
Julie Whelan, Chief Executive of Nordoff Robbins, adds: “We know how powerful our music therapy can be – it can help some of the most vulnerable and isolated people communicate and connect with the world around them. For so many people we work with, music therapy is simply a lifeline. However, we receive no government funding, which is why campaigns like Get Loud are so crucial in helping us raise awareness and ensuring that we can reach all those who need us. So please, join us this year and Get Loud for Nordoff Robbins in any way you can!”
Equality Now has announced that their annual Make Equality Reality Gala will be held in New York City on Monday, October 30, 2017, at Gotham Hall.
This year’s event, which will mark the organization’s 25th Anniversary, will honor Gucci America President and CEOSusan Chokachi and A Breeze of Hope Foundation Founder Brisa De Angulo. The 2017 Make Equality Reality Gala Co-Chairs are Gloria Steinem, Tara Lynda Guber, Susan Hassan, Chandra Jessee (Inmaat Foundation), Karen Lehner, and Sue Smalley, PhD.
“I am proud to be part of a company that is fully committed to protecting human rights and fighting for gender equality. In 2013 Gucci founded CHIMEFORCHANGE to campaign for education, health and justice for girls and women all over the world, supporting the work of organizations like Equality Now, which are proving – often against extreme odds – that change is possible. It is an honor to partner with Equality Now, whose legal victories and landmark legislation wins have helped to change the course of history for so many girls and women” said Susan Chokachi.
“As a survivor, it is my dream that people worldwide will join together – in solidarity with survivors – to end child sexual violence. Equality Now’s constant encouragement and dedication have strengthened my journey on the often difficult path to justice. I am thankful for this honor and the opportunity to bring to light the situation of too many Bolivian girls. It is important and healing for survivors to know that they are not alone,” said Brisa De Angulo.
Susan joined Gucci in 1998, and has spent nearly 20 years representing the company in various leadership roles in North America. Over the course of her career at Gucci, she has helped lead many of the company’s global philanthropic initiatives, including long-term partnerships with UNICEF, the Tribeca Film Institute, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and The Film Foundation. Susan also helped launch the company’s CHIME FOR CHANGE campaign, founded by Gucci in 2013 to convene, unite and strengthen the voices speaking out for girls and women around the world. The campaign uses innovative approaches to promote gender equality. Co-founded by Beyonce and Salma Hayek Pinault, the campaign works with a coalition of partner organizations, including Global Citizen, the Kering Foundation, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Facebook and Hearst Magazines. Since 2013, through CHIMEFORCHANGE, Susan has worked closely with Equality Now and Global Executive Director Yasmeen Hassan, who also serves on the CHIMEFORCHANGE Advisory Board.
Brisa is a leading campaigner against child and adolescent sexual abuse in Bolivia and was motivated to help others by her own experience of sexual assault when she was a teenager. Brisa grew up with her family in Cochabamba, Bolivia where as a teenager, she was raped repeatedly by an older cousin. When she finally reported the sexual assault, she faced intimidation and blame from the Bolivian authorities, as well as from her community and extended family. In 2004, Brisa started A Breeze of Hope (Fundacion Una Brisa De Esperanza), a charity that supports sexually abused children in Bolivia. Bolivia has one of the highest rates of sexual violence against women and children in South America, but one of the lowest reporting rates. It was the first organization in the country to provide social workers, therapists, and lawyers, all free of charge for children who are sexual abuse victims. In 2014, she partnered with Equality Now to address the alarming rates of child sexual abuse and incest in Bolivia and gaps in the law that allow it to continue – and to finally bring her own abuser to justice.
“Equality Now is thrilled to honor Susan Chokachi and Brisa de Angulo at our 25th anniversary event. We support and work with activists from all walks of life; they change the course of history. At a time when most corporations were unwilling to associate themselves with issues of gender equality and violence against women, Susan helped launched Gucci’s global campaign CHIMEFORCHANGE to support grassroots efforts for gender equality. Brisa who was sexually abused when she was growing up in Bolivia, used her experience to become one of the leading campaigners against sexual abuse in Latin America, establishing a center to empower girls and using her case to change the law. We are honored to work with such powerful and compassionate women!” Yasmeen Hassan, Global Executive Director of Equality Now, said.
Equality Now is dedicated to using the law to create a more just world for women and girls. Their international network of lawyers, activists, and supporters hold governments responsible for ending legal inequality, sex trafficking, sexual violence and harmful practices, such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and “child marriage”.
King was named by Life Magazine as one of the “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century”, and on August 12, 2009, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama for her work advocating for the rights of women and the LGBT community.
In 2000, GLAAD, an organization which works to eiminate discrimination against gays, lesbians and bisexuals, recognized King for “furthering the visibility and inclusion of the community in her work.”

NEW PROGRAMMING ANNOUNCEMENTS
NBC Snags Legal Drama Pilot “Closure”
NBC has landed “Closure,” a proposed legal procedural drama from “Drop Dead Diva” creator Josh Berman, “Underground” executive producer (and singer/songwriter) John Legend and Sony Pictures TV Studios. Written by Berman and produced through his Osprey production banner, “Closure” is based on the story of Serena Nunn, who at age 19 was sentenced to 15 years for conspiracy to distribute drugs, despite her being a student and her negligible role in the crime as the girlfriend of a drug dealer. Nunn became victim of the mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes, and, eight years into her jail term, she was featured in a newspaper article about the controversial practice. It got the attention of a young lawyer, Sam Sheldon, who filed a petition for a presidential commutation on her behalf. Supported by the governor of Minnesota, where Nunn had been raised, and Nunn’s sentencing judge, the petition was granted by then-President Bill Clinton.
When Nunn’s sentence was commuted after 11 years, she went on to earn a college and law school degrees and is now a practicing lawyer.

Notable attendees included: Michael Milken (Founder), Kool & The Gang (Performers), David Koch, Bill Ackman, Tom Lee, David and Sybil Yurman, Jonathan and Sheryl Sokoloff, Gina Rinehart, Dr. Francis Collins (Director of the National Institutes of Health), David Shulkin (Secretary of Veterans Affairs), Jerry and Adrianne Cohen, Mitch Modell, Larry Leeds, and Igor Tulchinsky.
The night began with a fun short quiz, touching on topics covered over the weekend, by the Founder of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Michael Milken, with guests guessing the answers from their seats. A short speech by Michael Milken highlighted how far PCF has come since its founding, and how much of a difference the foundation has made. A video was shown highlighting the foundation’s progress and its aim to make prostate cancer an illness to “find in the history books”. Next, a few words were spoken by PCF’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr.Jonathan W. Simons. Dr. Simons touched on the progress being made and how it has made it possible to identify the drivers behind the disease, not only in prostate cancer but in all types of cancer.
The first musical performance was by Paulo Szot, the acclaimed operatic baritone who has performed at the Met and received a Tony for South Pacific on Broadway. The evening’s next performance was held by Kool and the Gang, who performed an R&B medley of their most memorable hits.
A live auction was also held to support a young scientist. Attendees were asked to donate $75,000 per year for 1 to 3 year commitments to support the research of a young scientist and his or her research in prostate cancer. Guests made 15 such commitments. Alongside a silent auction, there was also a live auction package for the Home Run Challenge to attend four MLB games as a VIP with Mike Milken. Glenn Myles successfully bid $100,000 and was matched by a second bid for an second package by Arik Kislin.
Jan Haber, PCF’s Vice President of Events, then came to the stage to thank the weekend hosts, sponsors and donors for supporting the very important work of the PCF, after which she introduced the evening’s closing performers to the stage, award winning singers Kool and the Gang, who performed a few of their celebrated funk and R&B songs to the delight of the audience.
The gala was hosted in support of the 13th Annual Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament held from August 25 – 27, 2017 and named after the successful entrepreneur who turned tragic events throughout his life into philanthropic causes.
One of the highlights of the weekend was a special dialogue with tennis legend Billie Jean King on her remarkable life, tennis career and her ground-breaking advocacy for equality and empowerment of women. She also touched on the movie being released immortalizing her epic tennis exhibition match between her and Bobby Riggs which was televised nationally from the Houston Astrodome in 1973. The movie, Battle of the Sexes, which will be in theatres this September stars Oscar winner Emma Stone and Academy Award nominee Steve Carell.

Martial arts superstar and wildlife champion Jackie Chan is calling for an end to consuming pangolin products in a new public service announcement for WildAid and The Nature Conservancy.
The 47 second video spot was released last week to support a ban on all international trade in pangolins that was approved last year under the UN CITEStreaty. The video, entitled “Kung Fu Pangolin,” and accompanying billboards will be distributed widely in China and Vietnam, which are the main pangolin consuming nations. It features Chan training the scaly anteaters to protect themselves from poachers using kung fu, but he finds that curling up is the only thing they are able to do. Behind Chan’s back the pangolins develop ninja-like skills to defend against a would-be poacher.
While many people may have never heard of pangolins, they are the most heavily trafficked mammals on the planet. An estimated one million have been poached from the wild over the past decade.
In some countries, pangolin meat is consumed as a delicacy, and the animals’ scales are used in traditional Asian medicine. These shy, nocturnal creatures are seldom seen, but are often hunted down using dogs. When threatened, pangolins instinctively curl into a ball rather than try to escape, making them especially vulnerable to poaching.
“It’s crazy in this day and age that people are still eating these wild animals and threatening them with extinction. I hope we can persuade people that it’s the wrong thing to do,” Chan said.
“The priority for pangolin conservation is reducing consumer demand and improving enforcement,” said WildAid CEO Peter Knights. “Jackie reaches a vast audience across Asia and there are clear signs these campaigns have had an impact and attitudes are changing. Shark fin imports to China went down 81% in three years. Ivory seizures there were down 80% last year, and ivory and rhino horn prices have fallen by more than 50%.”
However, pangolins are heavily smuggled from Africa and Asia. Central African forests alone may be losing 400,000 pangolins per year to poachers, according to a recent estimate. As pangolins do not often survive in captivity, let alone reproduce, commercial breeding is not a viable option to supply the medicinal trade.
Pangolin scales are sometimes used in traditional Asian medicine for the treatment of rheumatism, skin disorders, wound infections and even cancer. Like rhino horn, pangolin scales are largely composed of keratin, the same protein found in human hair and fingernails. Pangolin meat is served as a delicacy in some exotic meat restaurants.
Earlier this month, officials in Malaysia seized 8 tons of pangolin scales. In June, Hong Kong customs officers seized 7.2 tons of scales, and late last year Shanghai authorities intercepted 3.1 tons, which represented up to 7,000 pangolins.
WildAid, along with partner organizations The Nature Conservancy and China Wildlife Conservation Association, premiered “Kung Fu Pangolin” at a Beijing press conference last week.
The Nature Conservancy China Chief Conservation Officer Zhao Peng said: “Pangolins are one of the oldest mammals on Earth. A pangolin weighing just 3kg can help protect roughly 16 hectares of forest from being overrun with ants. Protecting pangolins is not just about saving an endangered species, but also about healthy ecosystems.”
Also at the event, the China Wildlife Conservation Association awarded Chan the title of Wildlife Conservation Ambassador in recognition of his contribution to the protection of wildlife. Chan has worked with WildAid on projects since 1995.
The animated pangolins were created by the leading special effects house Tau/PHDFilms, which did the CGI work for the film “Life of Pi.”

Protecting the world’s oceans.
Oceana campaigns to protect and restore the world’s oceans. Its teams of marine scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates win specific and concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and to prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals and other sea life. Global in scope and dedicated to conservation, Oceana’s campaigners are based in North America (Washington, DC; New York, NY; Boston, MA; St. Petersburg, FL; Juneau and Anchorage, AK; Monterey, CA; and Portland, OR), Europe (Madrid, Spain; Brussels, Belgium) and South America (Santiago, Chile). Recently, the US Government — after campaigning by Oceana — adopted the Oceana approach and closed 1.8 million square kilometers of Pacific ocean to destructive trawling, an area more than four times the size of California. Oceana was prominently featured in the 2008 Green Issue of Vanity Fair, and was also named last year by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine as a “charity that deserves your dollars.”
In 2001, Oceana merged with the American Ocean’s Campaign (AOC), which was founded in 1987 by Ted Danson.

SILVER SPRING, MD – August 30, 2017– On Sunday, October 8 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, TV One will premiere the powerful original movie BOBBI KRISTINA, an honest and moving look at the young woman at the center of one of the most talked-about stories in recent years. Starring newcomer Joy Rovaris (Stuck in the Middle) in the title role, the film aims to restore what has been lost amidst the tabloid headlines: the real Bobbi Kristina Brown, a.k.a. “Krissy” – the vibrant, talented and troubled only daughter of pop music royalty Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, who died too young, and whose memory has been overshadowed by the circumstances of her death.
“The tabloids painted a picture of two superstars who lived a tumultuous life, but we often forget that in the process a little girl had to grow up in a limelight that she did not choose. In its simplest form, Bobbi Kristina is a story about a beautiful mother-daughter relationship intertwined with both of their desires to be loved; one just happened to be a superstar and the other an innocent bystander to her parents’ fame,” said D’Angela Proctor, TV One Head of Original Programming & Production.
Beginning immediately after the passing of her mother, the story delves into Bobbi Kristina’s struggle to come to terms with Houston’s sudden departure and the complexities of her own life. BOBBI KRISTINA presents the first three-dimensional look at a story – and a life – that deserve better. In 2012, Whitney Houston’s tragic demise put her entire family in the worldwide media spotlight, with most of the glare falling on her grieving daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Krissy became one of the main characters in the story of Houston’s death and its devastating aftermath as she struggled with her grief, her personal relationships, upholding her mother’s legacy and her plans for the future. BOBBI KRISTINA offers a rare glimpse into the world of this young woman whose brief life and untimely end remain shrouded in mystery.
Opposite Rovaris, BOBBI KRISTINA stars Demetria McKinney(House of Payne, Saints and Sinners) who delivers an uncanny performance as she embodies the heart, flair and essence of the legendary Whitney Houston. The film also stars Nadji Jeter(Grown Ups, Last Man Standing) as Nick Gordon, Hassan Johnson(The Wire, E.R.) as Bobby Brown, and Vivica A. Fox(Empire, Kill Bill) as Pat Houston. Le’Azionna Braden makes her screen debut as young Bobbi Kristina.
The film is directed by former child actor Ty Hodges(Don’t Look Under The Bed, Material Girls and Charlie, Trevor and Girl Savannah) with screenplay by Rhonda Baraka. Baraka previously wrote the TV One movies Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story, The Secret She Kept, and For the Love of Ruth. Executive Producers Tracey Baker Simmons and Wanda Shelley, creators of the docu-series’ “Being Bobby Brown” and “The Houstons,” developed the underlying story.
“Bobbi Kristina is a passion project for us because we watched Krissy grow up from the time she was 10 years old and until she became an amazing young adult. The world did not have the opportunity to know and love Krissy the way we did,” said Baker-Simmons, executive producer, alongside Wanda Shelley in Simmons Shelley Entertainment. “Krissy, like most young adults, shared one side of herself with her family and another side with her closest friends. This movie is told from that perspective.”
BOBBI KRISTINA is produced for TV One by Eric Tomosunas (executive producer), Keith Neal and James Seppelfrick of Swirl Films (When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story, Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story). Casting was provided by Leah Daniels Butler(Empire and Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story). For TV One, Donyell McCullough is Senior Director of Talent & Casting; Robyn Greene-Arrington is VP of Original Programming and Executive in Charge of Production, and D’Angela Proctor is Head of Original Programming and Production.
