Netflix – Executive Session

Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix

By Valerie Milano

Beverly Hills, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/29/16 – Netflix started out life as a video rental service that steamrolled the brick and mortar industry by establishing a business model using the U.S. Postal Service as it’s ‘delivery’ medium. It’s since morphed into a supersized media monster that has exploited digital technology to export content around the globe. Netflix shattered programming orthodoxy by rolling out a line of originally scripted shows that continue to dazzle in sheer volume and variety.  Traditional broadcast media continues to cower in the shadows while simultaneously feeding it’s tormentor with licensed content; most recently, the new CBS Star Trek series. Netflix still don’t need no stinkin’ ratings service and revenues continue to spike despite a statistical dip in their subscriber base.  Continue reading “Boldly Going…”

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Donations Lead To Significant Gene Discovery

Jul 28, 2016 01:30 pm

According to a paper published today in Nature Genetics, researchers part of Project MinE’s global gene sequencing effort, funded by The ALS Association through ALS Ice Bucket Challenge donations, have identified a new ALS gene, NEK1, which now ranks among the most common genes that contribute to the disease, providing scientists with another potential target for therapy development.

This was the largest-ever study of familial (inherited) ALS, involved contributions from over 80 researchers in 11 countries, and was led by John Landers, Ph.D., of University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass. and Jan Veldink, Ph.D., of University Medical Center Utrecht, in The Netherlands.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Eventually, people with ALS lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which leads to total paralysis and death, usually within two to five years of diagnosis. While 10 percent of ALS is familial, meaning it’s genetic, the other 90 percent of ALS cases are considered sporadic, or without a family history. However, it’s very likely that genetics contribute, directly or indirectly, to a much larger percentage of ALS cases.

Hundreds of celebrities took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, includingJustin Timberlake, Ben Stiller, Lena Dunham, Chloe Moretz, Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood, Robert Downey Jr, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Adam Levine, Oprah,Demi Lovato, Hilary Duff, Conan O’Brien and many others

“The discovery of NEK1 highlights the value of ‘big data’ in ALS research,” said Lucie Bruijn, Ph.D., M.B.A. “The sophisticated gene analysis that led to this finding was only possible because of the large number of ALS samples available,” she said. “The ALSIce Bucket Challenge enabled The ALS Association to invest in Project MinE’s work to create large biorepositories of ALS biosamples that are designed to allow exactly this kind of research and to produce exactly this kind of result.”

The ALS Association announced funding for Project MinE, an international effort to sequence the genomes of at least 15,000 people with ALS, in October 2014, which established the U.S. arm of the initiative with Dr. Landers’ research efforts. Project MinE was the brainchild of entrepreneur, and person living with ALS, Bernard Muller, who, along with another patient, Robbert Jan Stuit, saw an opportunity to expedite genetic understanding of the disease after a tour of a Research ALS Center in the Netherlands where thousands of DNA samples were stored and not being used because it was too expensive to do the research the Center wanted to do.

According to Muller, “The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge enabled us to secure funding from new sources in new parts of the world. Thankfully, The ALS Association brought Project MinE to the United States. This transatlantic collaboration supports our global gene hunt to identify the genetic drivers of ALS. I’m incredibly pleased with the discovery of the NEK1 gene adding another step towards our ultimate goal, eradicating this disease from the face of the earth.

NEK1 was discovered through a genome-wide search for ALS risk genes in over 1,000ALS families, and was independently found through different means in an isolated population in The Netherlands. Further analysis in over 13,000 sporadic ALSindividuals compared to controls again revealed an overrepresentation of variants in the same gene. The variations discovered in the gene sequence are predicted to lead to gene loss of function. NEK1 is known to have multiple roles in neurons, including maintenance of the cytoskeleton that gives the neuron its shape and promotes transport within the neuron. In addition, NEK1 has roles in regulating the membrane of the mitochondrion, which supplies energy to neurons and in repairing DNA. Disruption of each of these cellular functions through other means has been linked to increased risk of ALS.

“Global collaboration among scientists, which was really made possible by ALS Ice Bucket Challenge donations, led to this important discovery,” said Dr. Landers. “It is a prime example of the success that can come from the combined efforts of so many people, all dedicated to finding the causes of ALS. This kind of collaborative study is, more and more, where the field is headed.”

Understanding NEK1’s role in disease will provide an important new target for therapy development. The ALS Associations is currently funding Drs. John Landers and Catherine Lutz, Jackson Laboratories, to develop novel mouse models to better understand the consequences of the loss of the protein’s function for the ALS disease process. They will provide rapid access to these models for the broader ALS research community as soon as they are generated. These tools are important for ALS drug development.

Funding for Project MinE also came through The ALS Association Georgia Chapter, The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter and New Amsterdam City Swim.

This August, The ALS Association is seeking to raise awareness and funds to finish what the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge started in 2014: an end to ALS. The new campaign, called Every Drop Adds Up, pays homage to the Ice Bucket Challenge, visually emphasizes the now iconic “bucket,” and builds on the idea that when people come together they can make big, impossible things happen. Bid On An Extremely Rare Celebration Apple-1 Computer

Jul 28, 2016 09:00 am

Steve Jobs: Profile

Here’s your chance to own the computer that sparked the revolution in home computing!

A new online auction is giving you the opportunity to bid on “Celebration” Apple-1, an original Apple-1 pre-NTI board that has many unique features, period correct power supply, original Apple-1 ACI cassette board (also populated with Robinson Nugent sockets), early Apple-1 BASIC cassettes, original marketing material, and the most complete documentation set of the known Apple-1 boards.

The “Celebration” Apple-1 is extremely rare not only because of the scarcity of Apple-1 computers, but according to Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, no knownPCB boards of this type were ever sold to the public. At this time, this is the only known Apple-1 to show the signs of starting out as a blank original-run board and not part of the two known production runs, so this board appears to be unique from all other known Apple-1 boards.

The “Celebration” Apple-1 was authenticated by Apple Expert and Historian, Corey Cohen. Mr. Cohen believes The “Celebration” Apple-1 has the potential to be “powered up” with minor restoration, but has recommended against it to maintain the board’s unique configuration.

The Apple-1 Computer is considered the origin of the personal computer revolution and was built in Steve Jobs’ parents’ home on Crist Drive in Los Altos, CA. 200 were hand-built by Steve Wozniak, but it is believed that less than 60 are still in existence.

The Apple-1 board is a not just a piece of history, but a piece of art.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Prince Of Wales Launches Prince’s Farm Resilience Programme

Jul 28, 2016 07:30 am

JLS: Profile

The Prince of Wales hosted a reception at his Highgrove home last week to launch The Prince’s Farm Resilience Programme.

The programme aims to provide business support and one-to-one guidance to 300 family farms each year across the UK, as well as giving them the tools to evaluate their viability and long-term sustainability.

“No-one can predict the long term effects of the continued volatility in farm-gate prices, the many other uncertainties in the sector, or for that matter the depth of the crisis that is looming over many farming families,” said Prince Charles in his speech. “However, we can be certain that the sector is going to have to respond and that farm businesses of all sizes will need to be more efficient and resilient and improve their productivity and competiveness, through diversification and added value enterprises. This is why, if I may say so, my Farm Resilience Programme is so vitally important and I can only pray that it will give as much hope and confidence as possible to farmers during these uncertain and difficult times.”

The Prince’s Farm Resilience Programme will be run by The Prince’s Countryside Fund, a charity set up by The Prince in 2010 to improve the prospects of family farms and the quality of rural life.

During the reception, His Royal Highness met Ambassadors of The Prince’s Countryside Fund, including former JLS band member JB Gill, who now runs his own farm in Kent.

Elton John And David Furnish Attend 2016 International AIDS Conference

Jul 27, 2016 12:15 pm

The Elton John AIDS Foundation, its founder Sir Elton John and Chairman David Furnish attended a series of sessions, site visits and private meetings during the course of the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, which ended on Friday.

Video: Elton John And David Furnish In Durban

Their goal was to raise awareness of the continued need for funding and action in the fight against AIDS, to champion those most at risk of being left behind in the global response and to launch new initiatives that will provide HIV testing and treatment to thousands on the African continent.

One such initiative is a new $10m LGBT Fund, in partnership with the Office of the Global Aids Coordinator and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), to support LGBT communities in multiple African countries. Two organizations, The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (Alliance) and the Global Forum onMSM & HIV (MSMGF) were announced at the conference as the inaugural recipients of the LGBT fund. Sir Elton John also joined Prince Harry for a special session focused on the needs of HIV-youth in Africa.

Alliance, an organization that supports community groups in countries that are most affected by the global AIDS crisis and MSMGF, a non-profit that advocates for equitable access to HIV prevention, care, treatment, and support services for gay men, were the first organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa to receive grants to help address stigma, discrimination and violence against LGBT people, and to expand their access to HIV care and prevention. At the conference, EJAF also announced an initial start-up grant it will be providing to the International AIDS Society to launch its ‘Me and My Healthcare Provider’ campaign. This campaign celebrates doctors, nurses, and other frontline healthcare workers, who deliver quality, integrated HIV prevention, care, and treatment services to key populations, including gay men and transgender people, often in the face of discriminatory laws, traditions, and belief systems.

“Supporting LGBT people in the US, the UK and internationally, has been at the heart and soul of our Foundation’s mission from the very beginning,” said David Furnish, Chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “By partnering with PEPFAR to award the inaugural LGBT Fund recipients, and by supporting the International AIDS Society’s new ‘Me and My Healthcare Provider’ Campaign, we are building on that commitment and expanding this lifesaving work to places where it is needed most. Places whereLGBT people are much more likely to be living with HIV and far less likely to receive the essential services they need to stay healthy and alive. We believe these global campaigns will bridge the gap between LGBT communities and their service providers, which is essential for ending AIDS.”

Sir Elton also participated in a special session with Prince Harry, where the two men discussed the harmful consequences of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS in Africa, particularly among youth and adolescents. To achieve anAIDS-free world, both men stressed the need for education, access to testing and medical care, and support for young people worldwide.

“Empowered young people, from all walks of life and all circumstances, have always urged us to push past the status quo and reach for a dream that is BIG and BOLD, ” said Sir Elton John, Founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “Fifteen years ago, when the International AIDS Conference was last held in Durban, 1,000 South Africans were dying of AIDS each day – nearly 1 every minute. Today, HIV medicine costs as little as 3 rand – 20 cents – a day. The rate of new HIV infections here has been cut in half; almost all babies here are being born HIV free; and 3.5 million people here are now on treatment and living full and productive lives. That is some serious progress, and it’s because young, new voices demanded that people everywhere have access to lifesaving treatments, not just those in living in rich countries. If we want HIV programs to work for young people, we can’t tell them what to do or think, we need to nurture their voices. We need to listen to them and we need them to tell us what skills and services will help create the AIDS-free generation we all dream of.”

During their time in Durban, Sir Elton and EJAF Chairman David Furnish visited LGBTpeople, outreach workers, and staff at the Gateway clinic in Umlazi township alongside the South African health minister, Aaron Motsoaledi. Sir Elton and the Minister discussed the issue of providing pre-exposure prophylaxis medication or ‘PrEP’ toLGBT persons to protect them from acquiring HIV. The South African government has already approved the use of PrEP for sex workers – another high risk group for HIV.

The Gateway Clinic is one of over 100 clinics in South Africa whose staff have been trained to support LGBT clients under a grant from the Foundation to the NGO Anova. Over 1 million HIV tests will be given to LGBT clients during the course of the programme.

Sir Elton and David also visited HIV-positive adolescents at KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital where he emphasized the importance of helping young people overcome their disease and stigma by expanding their access to treatment and care.

Since 2013, EJAF has provided over $14.4 million in support for LGBT communities in Africa, Asia and Europe, and has invested $3.4 million to support its youth-based campaign “Young Survivors” in Harare (Zimbabwe), Kampala (Uganda), Kisumu (Kenya), Lusaka (Zambia) and Beira (Mozambique).

Manchester United And UNICEF Champion Rights Of Young People In China

Jul 27, 2016 07:30 am

Manchester United: Profile

Manchester United and UNICEF have joined forces during the club’s pre-season tour to champion the rights of underprivileged young people through a series of cultural activities.

United legends Bryan Robson and Ji-sung Park, plus players Michael Carrick and Paddy McNair, also took part in a Q&A session, which was broadcast live on Chinese social media platform, Sina Weibo.

Taking time out from the club’s pre-season tour of China, Robson, Park and the first-teamers spent time with six boys and girls from rural Gansu and Henan provinces, and encouraged them to talk about what matters in their lives.

The young people are benefiting from a life skills education programme supported by Unicef in collaboration with the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).

During the one hour interaction, the United players took part in the traditional Chinese game of shuttlecock kicking, before the teenagers shared stories of their experiences with the programme, for example overcoming problems at school and in their personal lives. The players gave advice on how to cope with setbacks and pressure, as well as how to be a good team player and lead a healthy lifestyle.

“The players and I were honoured to be here today and to be a part of this incredible partnership. I’ve witnessed first-hand the great work that Unicef does to protect vulnerable children, and am proud that the club is so supportive,” said former United and England captain Bryan Robson. “Adolescence is a crucial stage of life. It’s great to hear these young people share their stories and to give them advice on how they can cope with some of the challenges they might face.”

The players hope that their influence across the huge Manchester United fan base in China will help champion the rights of marginalised adolescents, and encourage young people to be the drivers of change.

Adolescence is often a challenging time for young people; an exciting but often uncertain transition from dependency to independence, sometimes leading to confusion, pressure and even depression.

“Adolescence is a valuable period of childhood in its own right, but it is also a critical period of transition and opportunity for improving life chances,” said Rana Flowers, Unicef Representative to China. “By providing positive and supportive opportunities that enrich the developmental environment during adolescence, it is possible to overcome some of the consequences of early childhood harm and build resilience to mitigate future harm. With their passion, resilience and commitment, players from Manchester United can be positive role models for young people, inspiring them to strive for success.”

The programme opened another door in my life,” said Zhang Bin, a 16-year-old boy from Gansu who migrated to work in the provincial capital after dropping out of school. “I took part in the training programme two years ago and it gave me the first-ever chance to live in a city, learn computer skills, access the Internet and visit a museum.”

The United for Unicef partnership is now in its 17th year and has raised over £4m, helping Unicef to change the lives of millions of vulnerable children worldwide. It is the longest running partnership of its kind between a sporting organisation and a global children’s organisation.

Doctor Who and Torchwood Writer James Moran adapts Dracula for the web

The first British produced Vlog Literary Series based on the classic novel, Dracula, is released in September.

YouTuber Liam Dryden, Eddsworld star Matt Hargreaves, standup comedian Rosie Holt and actress Kate Soulsby join the cast.

Moranic Productions release first teaser trailer for their new web series based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

London, UK, 28 July 2016 –  Writer-Director James Moran and producer Elisar Cabrera have announced today the completion of principal photography on season one of their new web series, “Mina Murray’s Journal”, an adaptation of “Dracula”, Bram Stoker’s classic novel which defined the vampire genre. The spine tingling tale is ready to scare a whole new generation, but this time, it’s told through vlogs, with multiplatform strands and in-character, interactive social media accounts filling out the story as it unfolds. While it has some scary moments, there’ll be plenty of self-referential laughs along the way. These characters live in today’s connected world, and are fully aware of fictional vampires but now they’re going to come face to face with a real one.

In a departure from the novel, the story is driven by Mina, a young woman just discovering that real life, work, and bills are a lot scarier than she expected. But all that pales in comparison when she comes across an ancient evil, which will put her and everyone she loves in danger. Mina is 23, funny, warm, ambitious, but stuck in a boring job that doesn’t challenge her, and not particularly enjoying her current relationship either. Openly and proudly bisexual, she’s happy in her own skin, but has no idea that her housemate Lucy is secretly in love with her. Fiercely loyal, Mina would go through hell to help her friends and family and she’s about to. Because she’s on a collision course with an ancient vampire: Count Dracula…

Moranic Productions today released the first teaser trailer for the series exclusively on the “Mina Murray’s Journal” YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ10oDkIZU4

Producer Elisar Cabrera confirmed today “Season one will be online in September, with fifteen episodes including a live stream and a finale. And because this is a modernised, vlog adaptation, and fans of Writer-Director James Moran will know how he likes to invert genre conventions, you may *think* you know the story but we’ve got plenty of surprises along the way. This is the first British produced V-Lit (Vlog Literary) series so I am immensely proud that we are adapting such an iconic British novel.”

James Moran, creator, writer and director of Mina Murray’s Journal will already be familiar to many fans of the horror and fantasy genre through his writing on movies “Severance”, “Cockneys vs Zombies” and “Tower Block”, and his writing on internationally acclaimed TV shows such as “Doctor Who”, “Torchwood”, “Eve” and “Spooks”.  His 2009 web series “Girl Number 9” was the first British series to make it into the Streamy Awards with 5 nominations in 2010, the third highest nominated series that year.

Joining creator James Moran and producer Elisar Cabrera on the creative team is Emmy and Streamy winning Transmedia Producer, Alexandra Edwards, who previously has worked on the transmedia of the multi award-winning web series “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” as well as “Welcome to Sanditon” and “Emma Approved”.

James Moran said: “I am extremely excited to be working with the super-talented Alexandra Edwards whose work I have admired so much on Lizzie Bennet and Emma Approved.  To be able to tell a story across multi-platforms and draw in a new audience to a classic story like Dracula through both YouTube and social media is a wonderful challenge.  The original novel was written in epistolary format, so technically it was already one of the first fictional blogs!”

The series stars up and coming standup comedian Rosie Holt as Mina Murray, Kate Soulsby as Lucy West, Scottish YouTuber Liam Dryden as John Harker and “Eddsworld” series regular Matt Hargreaves as Jack Seward.

Rosie Holt burst onto the comedy scene when she won So You Think You Write Funny: The Sitcom Trials with her hapless alter ego, Hayley. She went on to write and star in Fall Girl at the prestigious comedy venue The Gilded Balloon, has since moved into standup and written for The Huffington Post and Alain De Botton’s School of Life. She is currently performing her new standup show “Drop It Like A Holt” as part of London’s Camden Fringe Festival 2016.

Kate Soulsby trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and has since enjoyed success as an actor, writer and stand up comedian. Most recently she starred as Emily in a production of “The Rally” at Theatre Royal Stratford East. Prior to this she has taken leading roles in various feature films, including playing Dizzy in Paranoid Android’s horror anthology “Three’s a Shroud”.

Liam Dryden is a Scottish internet personality, writer, actor, and musician. He is best known as a part of the band Chameleon Circuit, whose music is entirely inspired by BBC television series Doctor Who; as Kairan “Kai” Fisher in sci-fi webseries “Chronicles of Syntax”; and as a founding organiser of Summer in the City, the UK’s largest YouTube community event. Collectively, his YouTube videos have surpassed 8 million views. He currently writes for YouTube news site We The Unicorns.

Matt Hargreaves is an actor who is best known as the voice of Matt in the popular animated series, “Eddsworld” which to date has over 1 million subscribers and over 182 million views on YouTube. A writer and director as well Matt has written for “Eddsworld” and creates his own videos for his personal YouTube channel, MattLobster.

Producer Elisar Cabrera of London based Capital City Entertainment has produced feature films, television and digital series.  His web series, “3some”, won two Indie Series Awards in 2014 and his latest feature film, “Ibiza Undead”, is set to have its world premiere at FrightFest 2016.  One of the best known faces in the UK independent web series community, Elisar also founded the Raindance Web Fest, the UK’s first web series film festival; the Dailymotion Web Series Pilot Contest and produces the VidfestUK event as part of the MCM London Comic Con.

The 19th annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival, September 17-18, is proud to announce award-winning actor and humanitarian, Gary Sinise, as Grand Marshal.

As part of the event, Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform in concert at noon on Saturday, September 17, 2016—with FREEadmission to active duty and their direct dependents. The band’s performance is generously donated by the Gary Sinise Foundation with flights provided by American Airlines, their official airline sponsor. Sinise began the Foundation in 2011 and it is now in its sixth year.

Honor. Gratitude. Rock & Roll. That’s the mission of every Lt. Dan Band concert. There’s something for everyone as the 12-member group covers hits from every genre. Performing pop songs to classic rock staples, the band raises awareness and lifts spirits everywhere it goes. The Gary Sinise & Lt. Dan Band is one of the many programs the Gary Sinise Foundation offers. They have played hundreds of shows for over half-a-million troops and their families and helped to raise funds to support the Gary Sinise Foundation’s outreach as well as military charities across the country.

“It’s always an honor to get to perform for those who serve, and the Lt. Dan Band is ready to bring a great show to this year’s festival,” said Sinise. “I want to thank the event organizers for naming me Honorary Grand Marshal and for believing wholeheartedly in the mission of the Gary Sinise Foundation.”

Tickets can be purchased online (www.fleetweeksandiego.org) or at the event. Coronado Speed Festival is free for active duty military and their direct dependents with ID. Children under 12 are free with adult paid admission. For the public, tickets cost $25 for one day and $35 for both days, in advance. Tickets will also be available at the venue ($35 one day and $45 for both days).

“It is a privilege to have a patriot as dedicated to the military as Gary Sinise serve as Grand Marshal for the Coronado Speed Festival,” says Dennis DuBard, president of the Fleet Week San Diego Board of Directors. “We are doubly honored to have the Lt. Dan Band perform and entertain, and know the concert will be before a sell-out crowd.”

Proceeds from the concert will benefit Team Rubicon, a disaster response organization comprised of more than 36,000 veterans and first responders, with the goal of helping the organization expand its skills training programs.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com/laboroflove. Doors open at 11:30 AM and Chris Young takes the stage at 2:30 PM. The concert event, taking place at Racine Festival Park in Racine, Wisconsin (5 5th St, Racine, WI 53403), will also feature local food vendors, and a silent auction will further benefit Team Rubicon.

The partnership with CASE and Team Rubicon is a natural one for Young – his father works in construction and multiple family members, including his younger sister, are either in the Marines or are US military veterans.

“I appreciate the CASE commitment to helping veterans fill the skills gap through Team Rubicon’s focus on training and development,” says Young. “I’m glad to support the important work they do in not only giving veterans the opportunity to improve job skills but also serve the community.”

“Labor of Love” launched in 2015 with the goal of connecting veterans with jobs and training in the skilled trades. The concert raised $10,000 for Wounded Warrior Projectin 2015.

“We launched Labor of Love last year to build a bridge between job-seeking veterans and a critical shortage of qualified equipment operators and technicians,” says Scott Harris, vice president – North America, CASE Construction Equipment. “This year, we’ve worked with Team Rubicon on their operator training program by providing equipment and support. It’s a natural progression of our relationship and we’re excited to work with TR and Chris Young to further this initiative.”

CASE will also be raising funds for Team Rubicon through an online fundraiser. To donate and show support for “Labor of Love” and Team Rubicon, visitCASE.TeamRubiconUSA.org.

George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush Mark 25th Anniversary of Signing of the National Literacy Act

July 25 marks the 25th anniversary of the passage of the National Literacy Act, which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush.

This landmark act was inspired in large part by Barbara Bush’s passion for literacy. Since its passage in 1991, millions of adults have had a second chance to earn their high school diplomas, and tens of millions more have learned to read, write and speak English.

As this milestone anniversary approaches, President and Mrs. Bush were asked to reflect on the passage of the National Literacy Act and its impact:

“Signing the National Literacy Act at once culminated the efforts of so many advocates from across the country, while also opening a new and more hopeful chapter for millions of Americans of all ages,” said President Bush. “I could not be prouder of Barbara for the 35 years she has spent working on this fundamentally important issue, and helping lead the charge for action and results. I am biased, of course, but I truly believe her passion, vision and dedication have helped change millions of lives for the better over these last 25 years.”

“The National Literacy Act put into policy my belief that education is a civil right, no matter one’s age,” said Mrs. Bush. “The needs of adult learners are so often overlooked, yet adult education initiatives have enormous potential to improve the social and economic well-being of families, communities and our nation as a whole. What was true 25 years ago is still true today: everyone deserves a chance to obtain the education they need to provide for their families, set the next generation on a path to success and achieve their dreams.”

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the signing, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy has curated a literacy resource center—available atwww.barbarabush.org — with media assets regarding the National Literacy Act:

The Foundation began celebrating the 25th anniversary of the National Literacy Act earlier this summer, with two events held in Washington, D.C. A day-long symposium gathered select technology leaders, entrepreneurs and policy experts from across the country to discuss visionary, bold and transformational ideas to address America’s adult literacy issues for the next 25 years. Senator Lamar Alexander, who served as U.S. Secretary of Education during the passage and implementation of the National Literacy Act in 1991, joined the group to speak about the successes of the law, which include initiation of national workforce demonstration projects, creation of “indicators” of program quality and establishment of literacy programs for incarcerated individuals.

The following evening, the Foundation hosted the inaugural National Celebration of Reading at the Library of Congress. Members of the Bush family and guests enjoyed readings by former First Lady Laura Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, David Baldacci, A.J. Jacobs and Jon Meacham. By hosting these events in Washington, D.C., the Foundation sought both to celebrate achievements in literacy, and to stimulate a broader national dialogue about solutions to the serious challenge of low literacy.

The End of Aids?

PBS Newshour recently featured a six-part series of reports entitled The End of AIDS?  For each report, they traveled to different locations to examine the state of the epidemic and the possibilities for progress toward an AIDS-free generation.

Learn more about this series and view the archived episodes.

EJAF is tackling many of the issues addressed in the series – in many of the cities featured in the series – by supporting local, grassroots organizations via grants and advocacy initiatives. During 2015 alone, we funded 134 grants for a total of nearly $9.8 million. We anticipate awarding up to $10 million in grants this year.

We applaud PBS Newshour for taking a serious, thoughtful, and incisive look at what will be required to end AIDS across the globe, including the unique challenges for different populations and geographic locations.

I urge all of EJAF’s friends and supporters to tune in to this excellent series, and learn more about how areas hardest-hit by the epidemic are working to fight it.
