49 Celebrities Honor 49 Victims of Orlando Tragedy

Jun 29, 2016 04:35 pm

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, released a special tribute to the 49 victims of the Orlando shooting at Pulse nightclub on Latin night.

Video: Stop the Hate: 49 Celebrities Honor 49 Victims of Orlando Tragedy in Ryan Murphy-Produced Tribute

The 18-minute tribute – directed by Emmy Award-winning Ryan Murphy and Ned Martel, with the support of their colleagues at Ryan Murphy Television – features a diverse cast of 49 actors, directors and other entertainment leaders recounting individual stories of the people killed in our nation’s deadliest mass shooting. Viewers are asked to visit stopthehate.hrc.org and take action by supporting victims’ families and survivors through healorlando.org, as well as contacting legislators to demand passage of LGBTQ protections and common-sense gun violence prevention measures.

The attack on Pulse nightclub has tragically become a symbol of how deadly anti-LGBTQ hate can become when it is combined with easy access to military-style assault weapons. In the wake of the attack in Orlando, HRC has been joined by a wide range of civil rights leaders in speaking out against laws and politicians who foment hate against LGBTQ people. HRC has also called on Congress to establish protections for LGBTQ people in all fifty states through the Equality Act and officially adopted a resolution in support of common-sense gun violence prevention legislation that will help ensure LGBTQ people and all Americans are safe and equal in every community.

“The 49 heroes who lost their lives on June 12 were brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors, boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives. They were mostly young and mostly Latinx. But above all, they were human beings who were loved, and who had hopes and dreams for long, full lives,” said HRCPresident Chad Griffin. “It has been only a few short weeks since we lost 49 people to a deadly act of hatred. It is our responsibility to keep their memories alive and honor their legacies by ensuring our nation acts to end anti-LGBTQ hate and gun violence. We are incredibly grateful to Ryan Murphy, Ned Martel and the 49 artists who came together to create this beautiful and lasting tribute.”

In the aftermath of the Orlando tragedy, Murphy asked how he could help drive awareness about the dual epidemics of anti-LGBTQ hate violence and gun violence that, together, claimed so many lives at Pulse nightclub. The result was this moving tribute, filmed over the course of three days, at FOX Studios in Los Angeles.

“The hate that stole these 49 individuals from all those who loved them has been allowed to flourish in our country for too long,” said Ryan Murphy, Emmy Award-winning screenwriter, director and producer. “No person is born hating another, and we have an obligation as Americans to stand up against prejudice and bigotry that would incite violence against someone simply for who they are. I am proud to have joined with Ned Martel, my talented colleagues, and the Human Rights Campaign to honor these 49 heroes and stop the hate.”

Brief vignettes recounted by leading performers and entertainment leaders tell the stories of all 49 victims (in order of appearance): Jean Carlos Nieves Rodriguez, 27; Stanley Almodovar III, 23; Deonka Deidra Drayton, 32; Luis Daniel Conde, 39; Juan Pablo Rivera Velazquez, 37; Javier Jorge-Reyes, 40; Shane Evan Tomlinson, 33; Luis Daniel Wilson-Leon, 37; Jean Carlos Mendez Perez, 35; Alejandro Barrios Martinez, 21; Brenda Lee Marquez McCool, 49; Christopher Joseph Sanfeliz, 24; Franky Jimmy De Jesús Velazquez, 50; Juan Chavez-Martinez, 25; Jerald Arthur Wright, 31; Antonio Davon Brown, 29; Miguel Angel Honorato, 30; Anthony Luis Laureano Disla, 25; ‘K.J.’ Morris, 37; Edward Sotomayor Jr., 34; Frankie Hernandez, 27; Akyra Monet Murray, 18; Joel Rayon Paniagua, 31; Jonathan Antonio Camuy Vega, 24; Yilmary Rodriguez Sulivan, 24; Geraldo A. The site will also be home to news and resources about stemming the tide of hate violence against the LGBTQ community.

Prince Harry To Begin New Focus On Fight Against HIV/AIDS

Jun 29, 2016 01:45 pm

Prince Harry: Profile

Prince Harry will begin a new series of engagements and meetings designed to shine a spotlight on the ongoing need for action in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Building on his decade of experience in supporting young people with HIV in Lesotho through his charity Sentebale, The Prince is now determined to help his generation understand that the battle against the disease has not yet been won and still needs fighting. He hopes to convene leading figures in this sector and support their vital work in ensuring that everyone – and young people in particular – get the help they deserve to lead healthy and successful lives.

In the UK more people are living with HIV than ever before with thousands of new people being diagnosed with the virus every year. In places like Southern Africa, HIV is the biggest killer of adolescents and represents a very real threat to the success of an entire generation. His Royal Highness wants to expand his own knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in the fight against the virus around the world. This will see him tackling topics including testing, treatment, and prevention as well as anti-stigma efforts that were famously championed by his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. Prince Harry believes that greater public awareness of the innovations in both testing and treatment for HIV can help save lives and he wants to do his part.

Next month, he will meet with doctors and nurses who are caring for patients in South London which is home to one of the highest concentrations of HIV-positive people in Europe. He will also visit an innovative sexual health service that encourages regular testing for HIV and outreach to the partners of newly diagnosed patients.

Later in July, Prince Harry will travel as Sentebale Patron to Durban, South Africa for the 2016 International AIDS Conference to meet leaders in the field and to speak to the assembled delegates.

Details of these engagements will be announced in due course.

Jennifer Garner Urges Support for Families Hit by Historic West Virginia Floods

Following historic flooding that hit West Virginia last Thursday and Friday, Save the Children is helping families and communities assess damages and meet immediate needs.

The organization has been working in the state for decades and runs programs to help children in three of the flood-affected counties, including Roane County, Calhoun County and Nicholas County.

Save the Children has been reaching out to the families of the hundreds of children who participate in its programs in West Virginia, but telephone and power outages has made it difficult. “We are very concerned that we still have only made contact with about half of the families in our programs,” said Save the Children’s West Virginia Director, Anna Hardway. Families have lost homes, vehicles and belongings in the devastating floods that have spread across 44 counties throughout the state. “Parents are telling us their children have lost their shoes and are walking barefoot in contaminated waters, and traveling in vehicles without car seats, because their own cars were washed away,” said Hardway.

Actor Jennifer Garner, a Save the Children Trustee and a native of West Virginia, is calling for support: “My heart is breaking for beautiful West Virginia — more than a quarter of children there already face the challenges that come with living in poverty,” said Garner. “The people of my home state are the most resilient you will find, but the damage caused by the storm and deadly floods has been catastrophic for these families and communities. I am relieved to know that Save the Children will continue to be on the ground in West Virginia throughout the cleanup and recovery, to make sure basic needs are met and services that families depend on most, including schools and afterschool programs, are restored. Let’s help Save the Children do what it does best.”

Save the Children serves families in five West Virginia counties through health, early education programs and afterschool programs. “We’ve worked in these communities for years, and this level of damage and loss is unprecedented,” said Carolyn Miles, Save the Children President and CEO.

The organization currently partners with local schools to help nearly 2,000 children in the state. Programs support mothers during pregnancy, provide home visits to families of infants and toddlers, help young children get ready for school, stay healthy and succeed in school and beyond.

Andy Murray And Kevin Spacey Team Up For Global Tiger Challenge At Wimbledon 2016

Jun 29, 2016 10:45 am

British tennis ace and WWF global ambassador Andy Murray has teamed up with actor and tennis fan Kevin Spacey to inspire the world to get behind an ambitious plan to double the number of tigers in the wild by the year 2022.

Video: Andy Murray and Kevin Spacey Serve Up Global Tiger Challenge at Wimbledon 2016

Heading into the tennis championship — Wimbledon 2016 — Murray is joined by Spacey on the All England Club’s Centre Court to champion the plight of tigers and inspire millions to get involved in a global campaign to protect them.

“It’s shocking to think that there are fewer than 4,000 tigers left in the wild,” Spacey said. “That’s less than a third of the number of seats at Centre Court. But whilst their situation is precarious, I have learnt from Andy that there is hope. We really can help tiger numbers recover. It’s a challenge that I’m proud to be part of drawing attention to.”

This year could be pivotal for tiger conservation: after a century of decline, global tiger numbers are on the rise. At least 3,890 tigers remain in the wild, but much more work is needed to protect this species that’s still vulnerable to extinction. WWF is working to help double the number of wild tigers by 2022 in the most ambitious tiger conservation goal ever set.

Now, to celebrate one of the most patriotic weekends of the year, the brand is bringing country superstar Chris Stapleton to the most populated military post in the country and will be donating up to $1 million in educational support to the spouses and children of fallen and disabled service members.

This year’s Fourth of July celebration at North Carolina’s Fort Bragg will culminate in a show-stopping performance from Chris Stapleton, CMA’s 2015 New Artist of the Year, in front of 40,000 service members, their families and members of the Fort Bragg community. The day before, on July 3, Fort Bragg will host the first-ever Major League Baseball game to be played on a military base. The Miami Marlins will go head-to-head with the Atlanta Braves, bringing one of America’s favorite pastimes to the service members of Fort Bragg just in time for Independence Day.

Lumos Foundation USA – author JK Rowling’s international non-profit children’s organization – announced today that J.K. Rowling will join Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne on stage at the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, November 12th, 2016 at 6:00 pm for a conversation, followed by a special advance screening of the much-anticipated Warner Bros. Pictures feature film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Tickets are available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office at 57th St. and Seventh Avenue in New York City, CarnegieCharge 212-247-7800, and online here.

This exclusive event to benefit Lumos Foundation USA, in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures and publisher Scholastic Inc., will follow the film’s worldwide premiere, being held earlier that week in New York, and is prior to the UK premiere in London the following week. The film will open worldwide on November 18th, 2016 and on November 19th, Scholastic will publish the screenplay of the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J. K. Rowling in the United States and Canada.

The benefit screening at Carnegie Hall will be introduced by director David Yates together with members of the cast. All proceeds will go directly toward the work of Lumos to help the eight million children in orphanages around the world get back to family life.

The film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a new and original story by J.K. Rowling, marking her screenwriting debut. In addition to Eddie Redmayne, the film also stars Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, and Colin Farrell.

Ticket revenues will support the We Are Lumos Worldwide campaign in the United States, United Kingdom and across the globe. The campaign will launch in September and help raise awareness and funds to end the harmful and unnecessary practice of placing children in orphanages.

“Decades of research and evidence show us that all aspects of a child’s development suffer when they are raised in orphanages and institutions. These places can never replace what a child needs, which is love, care and attention from a dedicated parent or caregiver,” said Georgette Mulheir, CEO of Lumos. “Because most children in orphanages are not orphans, they can go home if we can put the right support in place for their families.

“We are profoundly grateful to J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros. and Scholastic for making this exciting film screening possible. Not only is it an opportunity to be among the first to see the film, but it will also help Lumos do the vital work needed to help the millions of vulnerable and voiceless children in orphanages get back to their families and family life, which is their right, and it is where they belong.”

“Warner Bros. is proud to support the important work done by Lumos,” said Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. “Jo has inspired millions with her amazing storytelling, and now Lumos is doing the same through their work on behalf of children everywhere. They are truly changing the world, one child at a time.”

“J.K. Rowling’s brilliant Harry Potter series has inspired and encouraged millions of children around the world. Now Jo and the Lumos Foundation are improving the lives of millions more children by helping return them to family life, and Scholastic is proud to support this important work,” said Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO, Scholastic.

Thanks to the generosity of Warner Bros., Scholastic and Lumos’ 100% Pledge, every cent donated and raised by the event will go directly to Lumos’ Families Not Orphanages Fund. The Fund will help children in the countries where Lumos works to leave orphanages and return to a family life. No portion of any donations will go to administration, fundraising or overhead costs of the organization.

Visitors to the wearelumos.org/worldwide website are invited to sign up now to the We Are Lumos Worldwide campaign, which will launch in September. Those registering now will receive early notification of further exciting announcements.

Over the past decade, Lumos has helped thousands of children – from infants to older children – return to family life in Central and Eastern Europe and more recently in Haiti. Now, in its second decade, Lumos is expanding its work in Latin America and the Caribbean, and other regions around the world with the aim to end institutionalization of children globally by 2050.

Stars Celebrate First Graduating Class From Academy For Peace And Justice In Haiti

Jun 28, 2016 09:30 am
Over 40 international Artists for Peace and Justice members and supporters traveled to Port-au-Prince to celebrate the first graduating class of the Academy for Peace and Justice on June 19th.

Ben Stiller, BOVET Owner Pascal Raffy, Director Paul Haggis, and Jimmy Jean-Louis
Ben Stiller, BOVET Owner Pascal Raffy, Director Paul Haggis, and Jimmy Jean-Louis

Along with APJ Founder and Academy Award winning filmmaker Paul Haggis andBOVET owner and APJ supporter Pascal Raffy, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Susan Sarandon and Maria Bello were among those who made the trip to celebrate the Academy for Peace and Justice’s first graduating class and the opening of its newest building. They are all regular visitors to Haiti and have been dedicated advocates for the project since its inception.

Pascal Raffy was an early supporter of the APJ cause. At the end of 2013, he was so moved by what he experienced working with APJ that he pledged an official, long-term partnership between his company and the charity. BOVET would contribute $1 million of support annually for at least five years to ensure that 100% of all public donations toAPJ would go directly to their programs in Haiti. Mr. Raffy made the trip to Haiti in 2014 after signing the long-term partnership to see first-hand where the students lived and the efforts being made at the Academy. He returned resolute in his decision to support the children and their families together with APJ, ensuring that they receive the resources and education necessary to rise out of poverty.

APJ was created immediately following the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti when Paul Haggis gathered Hollywood friends in the backyard of his Santa Monica home. He had just returned from delivering humanitarian relief to Haiti and saw first-hand the enormity of what needed to be done next. Knowing that one-time, short-term commitments would not create the new institutions that the country so clearly needed, Haggis asked friends to make five-year commitments to build a dignified middle and high school for the very poor of Port-au-Prince.

With overwhelming support, the Academy for Peace and Justice was built over the following years in partnership with The St. Luke Foundation of Haiti and Haggis’s own Artists for Peace and Justice foundation. It was in these early days that Bovet supported their first fundraiser with APJ in LA at the beginning of 2012. The Academy was then just beginning, but growing by 400 students per year, it reached capacity in 2015 and now serves 2,600 students on full scholarship. The Academy also provides its students with year-round access to free medical care through St. Luke’s hospital.

On June 19th, 2016, Mr. Raffy returned to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to join Paul Haggis and other long-term supporters of the school to celebrate the Academy’s first graduating class. Mr. Raffy said of the momentous occasion, “I met the great Artists for Peace and Justice family during an evening on Sunset Boulevard. I then discovered Sun City [Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince] with Father Rick [of The St. Luke Foundation of Haiti], this giant, who inspired my indefectible will to feed Haiti’s children’s hope based on education, perseverance and pride. June 19th, 2016 celebrates our collective integrity, the sunrise of a new generation of excellence. They said it was impossible, but all together we did it. Congratulations to all the teachers, without whom this dream could not become a reality.”

Following Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, a whopping $10 billion in foreign aid commitments were made but the delivery of that assistance and much of the reconstruction and development process had been mired in broken promises, short term investments and failed projects, leaving Haiti with very few new institutions and infrastructure. APJ, however, has not faltered in its dedication to building important new learning institutions dedicated to helping Haiti’s youth rise from poverty with dignity. BOVET continues to stand in support of APJ’s ability to make real progress and continue the efforts into the future.

Founder Paul Haggis says, “What a long way we’ve come from the devastation of the 2010 earthquake. The broken buildings and shattered hopes have been no match for the tireless work of Father Rick [of The St. Luke Foundation for Haiti], our staff, all of our supporters and our students. The day has finally arrived—we welcome our first ever graduating class at the Academy. I cannot begin to convey the pride that I have for their hard work against unbelievable odds to reach this monumental day. The pride of a nation will walk with our students into a brighter future.”

The long-term charitable commitment made by BOVET and its owner, Pascal Raffy, represents the efforts of a member of the luxury market contributing back to the world. Pascal Raffy stands firmly with APJ and its supporters in their aim to grow a new generation of Haitian leaders by providing access to quality secondary and higher education. The model and guiding principles of the Academy are simple: that a primary school education is not sufficient to break the cycle of endemic poverty. This is true as a global philosophy to raise others from poverty through access to education and that even luxury spending, when conducted through a principled House like BOVET, can contribute to betterment of communities around the world.

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company and proud sponsor for the second straight year of the Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis, has released further details about the 1,776-mile, multi-state tour that uses Indian motorcycles as therapy for wounded and amputee veterans.

Video: 2016 Veterans Charity Ride – Indian Motorcycle

The Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis hand-selects veterans from all branches of the military to experience motorcycle therapy on Indian motorcycles, trikes and Champion sidecars while riding from Los Angeles to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. For 2016, 20 deserving veterans and veteran mentors will join the ride.

“I’m so grateful to the participants in this year’s ride and all our veterans for their service to our country,” said actor, producer and Indian Motorcycle enthusiast Mark Wahlberg. “This ride is a wonderful opportunity to support each other and enjoy the natural beauty of this great nation.”

The program was conceived and developed by veteran Army Paratrooper David Frey and Emmy Award-winning producer and director Robert Manciero of Full Vision Productions, leveraging the therapeutic effects of motorcycle riding to create an adventure of a lifetime for wounded veterans. For the second straight year the journey will be filmed so the message can be shared with as many veterans as possible.

“We’ll spend over a week riding on America’s most beautiful roads, getting to know each other and helping each other through Motorcycle Therapy,” said Frey. “The shared experience of serving brings us together, veteran to veteran, to help each other heal. We also show the veterans just how much their service means to America by stopping in small towns along the way to meet the people of our nation who want to celebrate these brave men and women.”

The nine-day journey stops in various towns and cities along the way, giving the veterans a chance to meet the grateful citizens they helped protect. Towns along their route include Las Vegas, N.V., Moab, Utah, Denver, Colo., and Hot Springs, S.D. Once in Sturgis, the veterans spend the week of the rally riding the Black Hills, attending events and taking part in the ultimate “Sturgis Experience.”

“Indian Motorcycle is proud to be a founding sponsor of the Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis in honor of the sacrifices made by these brave men and women,” said Indian Motorcycle Marketing Director Reid Wilson. “Indian Motorcycle has a long and proud heritage of supporting the U.S. Military and our troops over the course of the past century, and we are pleased to continue that tradition as a part of this noble and worthwhile initiative.”

Special events for our veterans at Sturgis include an exclusive luncheon with members of the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group on Aug. 7, the Legends Charity Memorial Ride on Aug. 8, VIP access to an evening of live music at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip on Aug. 10, the Freedom Celebration Ride departing Spearfish on Aug. 11 and a special shooting competition event at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip followed by an invite-only dinner at Indian Motorcycle of Sturgis on Aug. 12.

“Supporting our veterans by donating sidecars to accommodate amputee veterans in a safe, comfortable manner is something near and dear to our team and to me personally,” said Craig Arrojo, President of Champion Sidecars. “We are honored to be associated with such a worthy event, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Veterans Charity Ride for years to come.”

The New Political Humor Bestseller on Kindle:
Kim Kardashian Saves The World
(After President Trump Nearly Ends It)
What could be more ridiculous than electing a reality TV star President? How about a celebrity version of the CIA–the Celebrity Intelligence Agency–ready to spring into action to protect the world from a nuclear Donald Trump?
That’s the world we inhabit in author Richard Hine’s new political satire “Kim Kardashian Saves the World (After President Trump Nearly Ends It).”  The action begins when Trump receives a 3AM call from National Security Adviser Sean Hannity alerting him to a nuclear attack in Canada’s Northwest Territories.  Things go from bad to worse when Trump turns to Secretary of State Sarah Palin for advice…and the race is on to stop World War III.
Already a Political Humor bestseller on Kindle, Richard Hine’s new ebook is both fast-paced entertainment and an urgent reminder to readers across the political spectrum about the challenges our next President must be prepared to face.

Maria Darkina Comes to Cannes

By Dr. Laura Wilhelm

Maria Darkina was born in Vladivostok, Russia and moved with her family to Prague in the Czech Republic when she was a child. Maria’s artistic potential was recognized early on after she won awards at numerous young talent competitions.

Darkina graduated from the British International School of Prague with a focus upon theater and drama. She did additional work at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England and took vocal lessons with a former soloist from Russia’s great Bolshoi Theater. She relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 19 to pursue her acting career.

Maria Darkina now studies acting at UCLA with plans to graduate in August 2016 after earning an Associate of Fine Arts degree in acting at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Her roles have encompassed student film productions, plays, and music videos. She has also had modeling assignments from top designers.

Maria is soon to be featured in a film by acclaimed Serbian director Emir Kusturica titled ON THE MILKY ROAD starring the director and Monica Bellucci. Kusturica also invited her to perform with his band Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra at concerts in Moscow, Luxembourg, and Paris. Darkina will also co-star in the upcoming indie film STOREFRONT along with Jason London and Sally Kirkland.

Maria Darkina is fluent in Russian, Czech, and English with a lively cross-cultural perspective. She attended the renowned Cannes Film Festival in 2015 and 2016.

In 2015 Darkina was featured in the French magazine ‘Cote.’ In 2016 she participated in the prestigious Young Talent Program during its first year.

Maria has no family in the country and thinks that international status often speeds up the process of development in emigration. The human dimension has much to do with this. “The more you travel and see of the world, the more open you become to other nationalities,” claims Darkina.

Maria is 22 and will be turning 23 on July 17th, making her a Cancer near the cusp of Leo. Cancer attributes are seen in the emotional flow of acting and compassionate animal welfare work for Ace of Hearts. http://www.aceofheartsdogs.com/

Leo the Lioness ascends in Darkina’s martial arts activities and the survival skills needed to navigate the entertainment world of LA on her own terms. As Maria says, “Different types of people balance the world.”

Below are some of Maria Darkina’s observations about the red carpets of Cannes and her “young and crazy” life in LA culled from a telephone interview conducted on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 14th, 2016. It fell on Flag Day when Americans of all backgrounds reflect upon the foundations of the nation’s freedom and observe its unity.

Maria Darkina met many different types of people indeed in Cannes while conducting a slew of interviews. In 2015 Jane Fonda received a ‘Women in Motion’ award. Darkina would like to follow Fonda’s example of global philanthropy in later years.

Teachers and Russian relatives also fostered Darkina’s strong belief in herself and her artistic potential. She maintains a variety of interests with worldwide scope.

Passion and emotion remain driving forces for this Slavic transplant onto American soil. Success can hardly help but follow!

Ashley Greene Puts The Heat On Hunger

Jun 27, 2016 01:30 pm

Ashley Greene: Profile

For most children, summer is a time of fun and excitement, but for 18 million children in communities across the country it means the end of access to the free or reduced-price meals that nourish them during the school year.

For every six children receiving free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs, five lose access to those meals as public schools close for the summer.

Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, hosted a special Put the Heat on Hunger volunteer event last week with celebrity friends Ashley Greene and Darby Stanchfield.

The event was held at one of Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s partner agencies, Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School. Los Angeles County, according to recent Feeding America Map the Meal Gap data, has 536,100 food-insecure children, more than any other county in the United States.

Greene, Stanchfield and other volunteers toured the school, served lunch and distributed fresh produce to 120 children at an on-site farmer’s market. Los Angeles Regional Food Bank supplied the produce, which included apples, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes and plums.

“The end of the school year is a stressful time for many families across the country, and it should not be,” said Diana Aviv, Chief Executive Officer of Feeding America. “When children lose access to school meals, their families’ grocery bills skyrocket and families are forced to make tough choices between food and other basic necessities.”

Across the nation, the Feeding America network of food banks works to bridge this summer meal gap. Last year, 127 Feeding America food banks helped distribute 9.5 million meals to children at nearly 5,000 sites like the Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School.

“We must ensure that our children receive adequate nutrition and support throughout the summer months,” said Aviv. “The Feeding America network feeds more children than any other hunger-relief organization in the county and we encourage everyone to partner with us to ensure all children have access to healthy meals regardless of the season.”

Feeding America is teaming up with its Entertainment Council members and celebrity friends to host a series of Put the Heat on Hunger events across the country. The events are designed to raise awareness of the issue of child hunger and encourage the public to get involved.

The Elders Welcome Announcement Of Terms For Ceasefire In Colombia

The Elders welcome the announcement of the agreement on the “end of conflict” in Colombia, including the terms for a bilateral ceasefire between the Colombian security forces and the FARCguerrilla, as well as the modalities for disarmament and security guarantees.

Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, said: “We are encouraged by the work so far accomplished in Havana and by the perseverance of both parties in moving the peace process towards a successful conclusion. We commend the important roles that Norway and Cuba are playing as guarantors and Chile and Venezuela as accompanying countries, as well as the US. We also welcome the role a United Nations political mission will play in providing independent and credible international verification of the ceasefire.”

Ernesto Zedillo, member of The Elders, added: “Colombia is on the cusp of reaching an historic agreement. The Colombian people deserve peace and I sincerely hope they will seize this opportunity to end the violence they have lived through for generations, to bring redress for millions of victims, and to bring real opportunities to the people of the regions most affected by conflict. Peace is not an event but a process. It must be a national project, bringing together all Colombian patriots in an inclusive fashion, across political rifts, to have a respectful debate when they vote on the agreements and to ensure they are fully implemented.”

Prince Charles Opens Prince’s Trust Wolfson Centre In Glasgow

Jun 27, 2016 07:30 am

Prince Charles: Profile

On 22nd June, His Royal Highness The Duke of Rothesayofficially opened the Prince’s Trust Wolfson Centre in Glasgow.

Set to become Scotland’s largest employment and enterprise hub, the Centre will support young people to achieve success in education, work and business.

At the event, HRH made a speech to thank volunteers, staff and funders for their role in transforming young lives:

“I wanted to use this occasion to express my immense gratitude to so many of you who are here who have played such an important part in enabling this whole project to come to fruition. The role played by the Wolfson Foundation has been truly remarkable in enabling the building and everything that now takes place in it.

“But also I know that many of you have provided pro bono assistance in one form or another. For that we are hugely grateful. I can imagine just how many other requests and demands there are on your time and generosity – I can see you all nodding!

“From that point of view I appreciate it even more. But I hope all of you have seen what we can achieve as a result of the remarkable staff that the Prince’s Trust has who put so much effort and devotion into helping to turn young peoples lives around.

“It’s probably a great deal more challenging than you think but my goodness I’ve seen over the last 40 years – the difference is astonishing – in terms of what you can do just to build people’s self confidence and self esteem. And suddenly young people are able to take on almost anything, including having decided where their talents best lie.

“So many young people need that foundation for self-esteem and self-confidence including developing personal and social skills to be able to take on challenges. So I hope that we can do more of this kind of thing all around Scotland.

“But it cannot be done, any of this, without so many people like yourselves, without the volunteers, without the mentors, these wonderful people who provide so much of their time to help, encourage and advise, particularly with setting up enterprises.

“I am truly grateful to everyone who has helped to make The Trust what it is today. Thank you.”

Moviezoot.com Launches 2 Sophia Loren Hits Sophia Loren’s dramatic talent and comedic timing exhibited in 60’s collaborations with Ponte and De Sica

moviezootNew York, NY … M&M Television, Inc. and MovieZoot.com announces the addition of two early Sophia Loren films exhibiting the star’s destiny for longevity as original Italian sex-goddess.
The theatrical icon of both comedies and tragedies, the talented and beautiful Sophia Loren shines in this two-movie retrospective streaming for free onmoviezoot.com. Two Women (1960) and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) are masterly movies both produced by Loren’s husband Carlo Ponte and both directed by Vittorio De Sica that catapulted Sophia Loren into international movie superstardom early in her career, and with her subsequent work, has kept her in the A-list of celebrities for decades.
In Two Women, Loren portrays the mother of an impressionable young daughter, both of whom suffer the ravages of survival in an occupied Italy during WWII and the sacrifices a mother will make to protect her child. Loren won an Academy Award for her performance in Two Women – the first Oscar bestowed upon a foreign actress in a foreign language film.
In Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Loren exhibits a range of three love-smitten women in del Sica’s collection of three stories of three women in three cities in Italy.
Early in her career, studio bosses told Loren that her nose was too long and her mouth too wide to become anything but a bit-part actress, but she refused to change a thing and persisted at her craft.
Never one to take herself too seriously and always up for a bit of banter with the press, Loren attributes her lush curves to her Italian heritage, saying: “Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”
Loren will turn 82 in September of this year, and she is still turning heads of both men and women with her beauty, talent, poise, business acumen and social generosity.
At MovieZoot.com, there is no downloading required because the movies are streamed on-line directly to any device so Sophia Loren enthusiasts (or fans of almost any actor or actress) can watch – at no cost – what they want; when they want; how they want to view it; wherever they are located.

MovieZoot.com is wholly owned and operated by parent company M&M Television, Inc. and is based in Fayetteville, North Carolina with marketing and press representation in New York City.

The Girls Are Back in Town

The Wahine Classic, August 19-21, 2016

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC – Girls will take center stage during the Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic, the popular surf event scheduled for Aug. 19-21, 2016. Girls ranging from toddlers to more than 65 years of age will ride the clear, Bimini-blue waves for which this southeastern Atlantic surfing hotspot is known.
The Wahine Classic is one of only a handful of women’s surfing events on the East Coast. “Girls from Virginia to Florida make their way here to compete,” said Jo Pickett, female surfing legend and tournament organizer. “They love this competition because they get to know each other and learn from each other in a supportive environment.”
Friday, Aug.19, attendees under 18 can participate in clinics to learn about contest strategy and wave selection. “These surfers are young, might just be getting started, and need some pointers,” Pickett said. Packet pickup on Friday is at South End Surf Shop on Wrightsville Beach. Long-time Wahine Classic supporter Blockade Runner Beach Resort will serve as the host hotel.
Surfers may compete in a variety of divisions. The professional shortboard and longboard divisions will each offer a $1,000 purse split between the top four finishers for each board class. Cash purse sponsors are Marine Warehouse and the Crystal South Surf Community.
Amateur longboard and shortboard divisions are divided into age groups, as specified by Surfing America. The standup paddleboard surfing division is open to Wahines of all ages. Winners will receive prizes contributed by local, national, and international businesses.
Judges certified by the International Surfing Association will score the event.
Wahine Classic photo by Ed Potter
The Teeny Wahine Division, open to surfers ages 10 and under, is the highlight of the weekend for spectators. “We run it like a real division and put a jersey on each competitor,” Pickett said. “A parent or adult assists each child. Every competitor in the division gets an award and T-shirt.”
Wahine surfing events in Wrightsville Beach started in 1997 and continued through 2011. After a one-year hiatus, the ladies-only surfing competition returned due to widespread demand and support from surfing enthusiasts and the community. “The girls missed the contest when it didn’t run,” Pickett said. “They always say it is the most fun they have all summer.” 2016 marks the fourth year Pickett, owner of Crystal South Surf Camp, has been organizing the event.
“It’s encouraging to see an increase in girl’s and women’s participation in surfing, standup paddleboard, and other watersports,” said Mary Baggett, Wrightsville resident, and co-owner of Blockade Runner Beach Resort.
Pickett said the contest provides a festival-like atmosphere with displays and booths of interest to Wahines and the watersports community. Wrightsville Beach Public Accesses 37 and 38 are the best places for spectators to set up camp and browse vendor tents. Pickett expects around 100 competitors.
