The Post Group, Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/29/2014 – Last night the Post Group hosted a screening of PIONEER, the new Norwegian film from Magnolia Pictures, directed by Erik Skjoldbaerg.  It may be called Pioneer, but the film is actually a throwback to the 1970’s action thriller.  With classic zooms, muted colors, and intentionally unrefined handheld camera work, you actually feel like you’re watching a 70’s thriller. Beverly Hills, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/30/2014 -“It was an incredible honor to have someone of Mr. Aidikoff’s stature lend his name and talent to this festival, especially since it’s our first year. And we have amazing films, performers and sponsors,” said Prather Jackson, the publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Hollywood Weekly Magazine and the founder of its festival. I had the pleasure of covering their first annual film festival on Saturday, September 20th, at the iconic William Morris building’s Charles Aidikoff Screening room. This event paid tribute to legends in the film and TV industry at a really iconic place as Aidikoff is a renowned projectionist and a living legend in Hollywood. He has worked in the industry for over 75 years and claims to have seen over 50,000 films. Aidikoff is 99 years young and a lovely soul. I had met him at a screening that he hosted during awards season of Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington’s Flight. Talking to Aidikoff is like talking to the archives of Hollywood. He is naturally so sharp about so many movies and various genres of film, so I was really impressed that the festival was held at this esteemed location. Aidikoff’s grandson, Josh, was in attendance to show his support for the festival. Continue reading “Hollywood Weekly Magazine’s First Annual Film Festival”

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/28/14 – It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Southern California and, despite the traffic, my friend Blu and I made our way to the Feline Film Festival held in downtown L.A. at Exposition Park.

Sponsored locally by Found Animals Adopt and Shop, the Feline Film Festival is a first for Los Angeles and there was something for every cat fancier from cat adoptions to new cat products, cat-themed jewelry and celebrity cats—not to mention the rockin’ bands and the feline films. Forrest Gump Screenwriter Eric Roth

By William Hagle

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/28/14 – Academy Award-winning writer Eric Roth’s brand new Academy Originals episode presents a soft voice in a hard business. http://youtu.be/N3_QmiNs52o

His working method would be unthinkably demanding for those of us trained on Final Draft and other script writing software. He uses a primitive MS DOS text program that can safely be called “anachronistic.” So, that means he chunked together Forrest Gump, Munich, The Horse Whisperer and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button forty pages at a time, the limit his program will save. He says it helps him think in one act at a time, given the usual three-act 120-page screenplay. Continue reading “Caught on Camera Academy Originals: Eric Roth”

PARS EQUALITY CENTER’S 1st ANNUAL LOS ANGELES AUTUMN GALA FEATURES POPULAR PERSIAN POP BAND THE BLACK CATS

By Vida Ghaffari

Universal City, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/25/2014 – It’s amazing to be here. I wish there was a program like this when I came to the states,” said Navid Negahban (Homeland, The Stoning of Soraya M.) Negahban is speaking of the wonderful non-profit organization known as The Pars Equality Center (PEC) (www.parsequalitycenter.org). On Saturday, September 13, 2014, PEC celebrated its first annual autumn gala at the Hilton Universal Hotel in Universal City. Over 350 influential and VIP guests from LA and the Bay Area gathered for an evening of festivities and celebration while raising awareness and funds for the Iranian American community in need, including social and legal programs. Funds raised at this yearly event go towards the continued funding of the Center’s social and legal programs.

PEC Executive Director and Founder Bita Daryabari said, “We are honored to be working with the community in the Los Angeles area. With the great success of our sold-out annual Nowruz Galas in the Bay Area, Pars Equality Center is excited to now also host an annual Autumn Gala for its supporters in Southern California. Whether it’s for American-born Iranians seeking help with securing employment or applying for college grants – or supporting the process to bring a dear family member over from Iran, we are here to help the entire community.”

Masters of Ceremonies for the evening were Emmy®-winning (House of Saddam) and Oscar-nominated (House of Sand and Fog) acclaimed actress, Shohreh Aghdashloo and her husband, Houshang Touzie, a talented Iranian actor (Argo)/playwright (Surprise Party, From Satellite with Love).

Aghdashloo said, “Houshang and I believe that a life without service is not a meaningful life. Love, friendship, and humanity have brought us here tonight. I am so privileged and honored to be an MC tonight. I believe in Pars Equality Center and it’s really nice to be be a part of this fundraiser and help Pars continue its wonderful services.” She added, “They help new immigrant families in Northern and Southern California get their footing a new country.” For Aghdashoo, it’s all come full circle as she’s often played immigrants who recently move to the US for a better life, much like the people that PEC helps. And her journey out of Iran was very taxing. “I drove from Iran to London all by myself. I know how hard it can be to start over,” she said.

“I’m honored to be be an MC. This is the second time Pars has asked me. I’m so happy and honored to do this as I’m a soldier of democracy and humanity for whomever who helps those that are under-privileged and Bita truly has. I can only hope all the fortunate Iranian people could help the unfortunate and under-privileged Iranian-Americans and all human beings around the world,” said actor (Argo, Homeland) and playwright (Surprise Party) Houshang Touzie.

“We really support all that Bita does for our community and for the world community, so our show tonight will be world music,” said Shahbal Shabpareh, founder of The Black Cats

Hopefully, we can all raise a lot of money,” added actress Saye Yabandeh (5th and Alameda).

Bita is a good friend of mine and her philanthropy is unmatched. I’m very proud of her. I take great pride as an Iranian that I have a friend like Bita, who is a beautiful young woman who takes responsibility to do positive things that benefits so many lives,” said Asa Soltan Rahmati (Shahs of Sunset).

“I think it’s amazing that there are people like Bita who care so much about the community and that this wonderful organization even exists. She’s dedicated her time, her resources and her life to helping others in need,” said Reza Farahan (Shahs of Sunset).

“I always support Bita. She does so many great things for the Iranian community and she’s truly amazing. She awarded my father (Houshang Seyhoun) the Bita Prize for Literature, which meant so much to me and my family,” said Maryam Seyhoun of Seyhoun Gallery.

“It’s such a good cause. We have our foundation (Farhang) and Bita has hers. We need to support each other. Our community has really matured and has started to become more culturally inclined, as well as more involved in human rights issues, helping children and adults with cancer, and other charitable endeavors, which makes it so important that we support each other,” said Dr. Firouz Naderi, who was one of the gala’s sponsors. Dr. Naderi is currently the Director for Solar System Exploration at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and on the boards of Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) and Keep Children in School.

I’m so excited. I really hope they raise a lot of money. I drove all the way from San Diego for this event and as an Iranian-American, I really wanted to show my support for this organization and all that Bita does,” said Fred Monajami, owner of the Daily Grind Restaurant.

We came all the way from London, as it’s such a good cause and because we know Bita, who is such an amazing philanthropist. She’s also supported our gallery,” said Houman Meshkati, owner of Meshkati Fine Art.

Her head and heart are in the right place and she’s doing a great job of helping our community. For such a young woman to do so much charity work, that’s remarkable and she’s setting such a good example for Iranians of all ages to be more charitable. This shows the greatness of her mind, soul, and her heart,” said renowned fertility doctor Dr. Ari Babaknia.

The gala featured a live performance by renowned Persian band The Black Cats. Formed in Iran in the mid-1960s, and having performed in iconic arenas across the globe, they are the longest-standing band in the Persian music industry. In addition to a silent auction, there was music, dancing, raffles, surprise guests, a delicious Persian dinner and desserts catered by Badri Abrishami. Partners and sponsors for the Gala included Gail and Nariman Teymourian, Dr. Firouz Naderi, Pedram Salimpour, Farhad Mohit, Bobby Sarnevesht, Homa Sarshar and Shahrzad Ardalan, amongst others.

A very famous Iranian actress that shall remain nameless donated her beautiful lavender scarf to the auction, which Bobby Sarnevesht bid on for $7,000 and gave to A$a as a gift. It was a symbolic gesture of the actress removing her veil and tossing it in the air before the bid, which made a strong impact on the audience.

In her welcome speech, PEC Executive Director and Founder Daryabari said, As a community we have much to be proud of in our countrymen’s accomplishments in virtually every field of industry: technology, science, research and movies. From Dropbox and Bluetooth to Google and Ebay, from Homeland, to 24, Shahs of Sunset, House of Sand and Fog and Iron Man, Iranian-Americans have been at the forefront of new developments. But, these are not only sources for our pride. They also bring with them a sense of responsibility. We must not only be good custodians of our great cultural legacy, but we must also come together as a community to help those amongst us who are in their hour of need. All of us have, in our lives, had moments of hardship. Pars Equality Center ‘s mandate is to help the weakest links of our community.”

Daryabari added, “For us, every Iranian, regardless of their religion, gender, and ethnic affiliations, is an equally valued member of our community. We began our work in Northern California but we soon realized that without an office in Southern California, where the greatest number of Iranian emigrants and asylum seekers live, we can’t realize our goals. We happily have helped 200 individuals and family-members since opening in LA last year, but there are so many more that we will only be able to help with your assistance.”

And lastly Bita added,” It’s an honor to be a part of this community. I belong to this community and this community belongs to me.”

Nothing Sleepy About This Hollow!

Cast speak onstage at the “Sleepy Hollow” panel during the FOX Network portion of the 2014 Summer Television Critics Association at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on July 20, 2014 in Beverly Hills, California.

By Valerie Milano and Michele Black

Beverly Hills, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/22/2014 – After a long nine month wait. Sleepy Hollow, Fox’s Fall 2013 TV breakout success and biggest hit of last season, is back for round two!  Executive Producer Mark Goffman stated, “I really think people are going to be shocked by how we start up. They’ll think one thing is going on and in typical Sleepy Hollow manner, flip it on its head.”  Flip it on its head they did, beginning with the Season One finale. Let’s recap for those that may not have seen the finale (you’d have had to be living under a rock not to have seen it). Orlando Jones, who plays Captain Frank Irving, warned us that the finale would be “devastating.”  Truer words were never spoken! Viewers watched as Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) was attacked by the Headless Horseman (Neil Jackson) and then left for dead after her car flipped. Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), Henry Parrish (John Noble) and Abbie (Nicole Beharie) made their way to George Washington’s hidden tomb in order to find Washington’s bible that contained a map. Next we find them attempting to decipher the map that apparently unlocks a secret message giving them detailed instructions on how to find a key that would help them make their way from the spirit world to earth; thus, enabling Crane to rescue his wife Katrina (Katia Winters) from purgatory. There’s just one catch: the evil god of Moloch is in pursuit of the same map in his quest to open the doors of the spirit world and bring forth an army to aid in the start of the apocalypse.  In an effort to prevent the war. Abbie and Ichabod agree to go into purgatory and get Katrina out so she could cast a spell preventing Molech from starting the war. Ichabod Crane becomes obsessed with getting his wife Katrina out of purgatory. Abbie begins to mistrust Crane’s motives. So, Crane, in an attempt to show Abbie she has nothing to worry about, burns the map, but not before committing it to memory!! Abbie is none to happy to find out that Ichabod was less than genuine with her. Recalling the map by memory, Crane is able to enter purgatory with Abbie, but not before Henry warns them not to eat or drink anything while they are there. Crane is able to rescue Katrina from purgatory, but is forced to leave Abbie there. Crane promises to return for her. However, before he can do that, Katrina just out of purgatory finds she is unable to cast a spell preventing “war” from coming to earth from the spirit world. Dr. Oz performs a quadruple bypass operation on a Vietnam veteran and former drug user, but first the patient must make good on his promise to quit smoking before surgery.

“To My Children” airing Thursday, November 13 from 10-10:30 p.m. ET/PT

Dr. Oz operates on a young mother who has a genetic heart defect and has to stop her heart to make the repair.  Later, Dr. Oz’s youngest daughter, Zoe, who is interested in following in her father’s footsteps with a career in the medical field, visits the OR to observe her father in his element.

Future episodes will feature a newlywed who needs to replace his aortic valve in order to make it to his one-year anniversary; and Dr. Oz faces an ethical dilemma when a patient in heart failure asks to remove a heart pump that’s keeping him alive; and a challenging case with a patient who needs not one, but two heart valves replaced.
