A Quiet Place
Release Date US April 6, 2018
Film Awards Review by Ché Zuro

I decided to watch this film right before bed. Bad idea.

Feeling as though I were somewhere between my childhood, watching the original Twilight Zone, Outer Limits or Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and my young adulthood, going to see Alien and The Shining on the big screen, this film fits right into the “scare the crap out of me” genre.

A Quiet Place is terrifying. I know, I know, it is only a movie, but the circumstances of a post apocalyptic world and a family, still together, facing the impossible feat of survival, cut straight through my heart and soul. (And scared the crap out of me. See above.)

The story begins with scenes of what looks like an abandoned town, torn apart, total destruction, with children seemingly playing in a deserted pharmacy. With the children speaking with each other via sign language, one wonders if they are deaf (one of them, we find out, IS), then we see the whole family leaving the building, all barefoot yet clothed like the weather is not quite warm, the story really begins. With paths lined with white sand, they trudge on toward their destination, quietly, stopping here and there only to communicate with each other quietly.

Sound, or the lack thereof, is the key to survival in this film. Any kind of sound, a cough, a sneeze, dropping something, could be the demise of a human being in this story.

As one watches this beautifully frightened family – the parents aptly played by Emily Blunt and John Krasinski and children by Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and Cade Woodward – try to continue living in this very scary, silent world, we see just how the population could decrease while lives are very quickly taken away.

The acting, done with very little spoken dialogue, was amazing. Watching these brilliant actors go through their daily routines without being able to express themselves with sound, was something that not many of us can relate to.

The children acting in this were just as fantastic as the adults, with Simmonds playing the deaf child, and the sound in the film representing what she hears daily.

Living almost always underground, the family does just about everything that a normal family would do, except work, drive, play outside and anything that requires noise, and when there is some kind of mistaken noise, monsters appear out of nowhere. And the monsters are frighteningly ugly, huge mouths with long sharp teeth with freaky vocal sounds, pulsating heads and long slimy limbs.

You do NOT want one of these to find you.

As much as this film scared me, it was brilliant. It was very creative and the acting brilliant. The sound editing was profound, hearing every little morsel of a floor creaking to someone accidentally dropping something, juxtaposed with Regan Abbott’s unability to hear anything, until she does.

This is a must see if you like this genre of film and a “be careful” if you don’t.

ColorProof: The Secret to Red Carpet Ready Hair

Color Proof: The Secret to Red Carpet Ready Hair

By: Meg Taylor

As the awards season has officially come to an end, everyone is dying to know how celebrities achieved their flawless looks all season long. The key to red carpet ready hair is not only using products that are highly acclaimed but to use hair products that only include the best ingredients.

For colored hair, this has remained a constant battle on trying to find the right products to lock in color and to make your hair shine. ColorProof Color Care Authority is a complete line of professional luxury products designed exclusively for color-treated hair.

Their products are 100% vegan, sulfate-free, salt-free, gluten-free, paraben-free, and never tested on animals. Sounds too good to be true? That’s what I thought, so I decided to try it out.

I tested the CrazySmooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo, CrazySmooth Anti-Frizz Treatment Masque, and the ColorProof PowderFix Texturizing Powder Spray and was stunned.

While washing my hair, the shampoo made my hair silky smooth; which normally my hair doesn’t feel that way until after it is conditioned. The shampoo includes a blend of exclusive oils including Camellia Oil from Japan and Abyssinian Oil from Africa, with seaweed and shea butter.

CrazySmooth Shampoo

It instantly eliminates unruly frizz and infuses hair with extreme smoothness, shine and super healthy condition without weighing hair down. The CrazySmooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo retails at $39.00.

I thought my hair was already silky enough until I used the treatment masque. What I found interesting about this masque is that it is instructed to be applied from the scalp until the end. I was a little skeptical because I didn’t want to have greasy roots but trusted in the directions. The treatment masque includes a blend of soybean lipids, seaweed and shea butter to dramatically condition, miraculously tame, restore integrity and add much-needed elasticity and tensile strength for healthier, more youthful hair.

I left the masque in my hair for 5 minutes, instructed to be left in for 1-5 minutes, and rinsed my hair and waited for results. CrazySmooth Anti-Frizz Treatment Masque retails at $48.00.

Anti-Frizz Treatment Masque

I have natural wavy/curly hair and don’t typically put heat to my hair. I am constantly battling frizz because I let my curls air dry. After I brushed through my hair, I noticed a difference. My hair was velvety and appeared healthier already. After about an hour, my curls were bouncy and hydrated; no frizz at all. With colored hair, people typically don’t shampoo and condition their hair everyday to maintain color vibrancy. On day 3, my hair was no where near greasy and still maintained a no-frizz look.

I did however use the ColorProof PowderFix Texturizing Powder Spray to give my hair a little volume. The spray is designed exclusively for color-treated hair with a proprietary blend of revolutionary volumizing polymers and Pro Vitamin B5 Panthenol. Texturizing sprays may sometimes leave your hair feeling brittle or appearing greasy; I didn’t have that problem with this product.

Powder Fix Spray

The easy-dispensing, puff applicator allows users to seamlessly achieve volume at the roots, crown, or specific areas with no mess in three simple steps: spray, massage, and style. ColorProof PowderFix Texturizing Powder Spray retails at $25.00.

Overall, I had an incredible experience with Color Proof Color Care Authority. They offer various cruelty-free products for every hair type. I strongly recommend to anyone who wants to achieve that effortlessly flawless look to seek out Color Proof products. About ColorProof

Jim Markham is a highly acclaimed Beauty Industry icon who has led an amazing trailblazing career from being a prominent celebrity hair stylist to developing and innovating over 300 products for five highly successful hair care companies, four of which he founded and five owned including: ColorProof Color Care Authority, PureOlogy Serious Colour Care, ABBA Pure and Natural, Markham Products, and Sebring International.

With each new venture the Markham name has become synonymous with authentic, premium performance products that serve as an Industry standard. To date, under his leadership, Markham’s combined companies have generated over $1.2 billion in retail sales. He is best known for developing the first luxury professional line exclusively for color treated hair and for pioneering sulfate-free shampoos that have revolutionized the way color treated hair is cared for.

Markham was inspired to launch ColorProof Color Care Authority in 2011 after realizing that color care technology hadn’t advanced much since he launched PureOlogy ten years prior. Markham states, “Technology is always improving, including ingredient technology. What was good enough 10 years ago is no longer good enough. Just as you wouldn’t use a 10 year-old phone or computer, why use 10 year-old hair care technology when much more advanced technology is available.” With the persistent urging of colleagues and stylists, and his ceaseless passion for product development, Markham was inspired to make a valiant return to revolutionize the Industry once again. ColorProof features a full line of professional, luxury products designed exclusively for color-treated hair combining the latest ingredient technology with best-in-class formulas to create a new standard in color care, protecting hair color from start through finish.

Markham is very involved with the product development process at every level. Markham states, “I’ve built an elite team of some of the best chemists, researchers and ingredient experts in the world who are dedicated to sourcing and utilizing next generation ingredients. We collaborate to create products that are the finest quality with the most advanced technology, bar none.”

The company takes a unique approach to product development. Many manufacturers, Markham explains, conceive a product looking at price point first and performance last which ultimately limits the quality of ingredients that can be used. “We’re not limited by the cost of goods,” he says. “We begin our product development process by determining, first and foremost, the product’s desired performance with superior ingredients and then work backwards – determining the price point last. This is the only way to ensure true innovation.”

Markham personally directs his team to select the very highest quality, newest ingredients available to achieve optimum performance of his dream product and then empowers his inner circle of testers including highly trained educators, stylists and consumers, who provide valuable feedback on all aspects of the product. Products are not released until they are proven to exceed the performance of any other product in their category. “ColorProof is the next generation in luxury color care,” Markham continues. “Every product in the line is best-in-class and provides maximum color protection for hair that’s shiny, beautiful, vibrant, healthy and instantly youthful-looking.”

Following Hurricane Katrina and at the urging of his good friend, the late, Vidal Sassoon, Markham and his wife Cheryl traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to fund and build homes with Habitat for Humanity.

The Markhams are also well-known and active donors of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s charity, SeriousFun Children’s Network (formerly known as Hole in the Wall Gang Camp), which provides assistance to seriously ill children and their families.

The Markhams continue to proudly support worthy causes both locally and internationally.

  REVOLT Global Spin Awards

Child star DJ’s DJ Amira and DJ Kayla attend the 2018 Global Spin Awards

By Audrey Rock

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 3/1/18 – A child of the 90’s doesn’t forget the moment Ludacris takes the stage in an epic rap performance.  Then…Snoop Dogg joins him.  Then…Sean Diddy Combs. Then Jermaine Dupris.  This legendary rap quartet did in fact occur at the 6th annual REVOLT Global Spin Awards February 15th at DTLA’s Novo Center, later rebroadcast exclusively on REVOLT TV.

The four monarchs of hip-hop performed Welcome to Atlanta Coast 2 Coast Remix to a crowd gone wild—more wild with each monumental addition to the stage. By the time that was over, it almost felt as if absolutely nothing could top it.  It quite literally brought the house down.  Continue reading ”  REVOLT Global Spin Awards”

Short & Sweet Movie Reviews – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Short & Sweet Movie Reviews
by Ché Zuro

Three Billboards is another unique film in this year’s great group of fantastic releases!

The beginning of the film was so intriguing that I became glued to the screen in the first minute. Francis McDormand brilliantly plays a pissed off Mom, still looking for the killer of her daughter, while the Sheriff’s Department sits on their butts. The little town of Ebbing, Missouri has a racist feel with the “good old boy network” within the police department who regularly harass people of color for no good reason. Mom decides to take the law into her own hands, no holds barred!

With an incredible cast including McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell, this film was yet another one of my favorites of the award seasons and cannot be passed up. (The amount of nominations it has received in the majority of the different award shows is a good reason to just see the film!) The ensemble of actors worked so well together, each actor diving into his or her character regardless of whether they agreed with the character’s actions or not, with no fear. Even with so many characters being typical, put into a specific category, ( i.e. the male 30-something white Sheriff Department deputy who still with his controlling mom as well as the out of state red neck bad guys, hassling locals while drunk driving in a beat up truck) they were all believable and added to the feel of this depressing yet hopeful film.

Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell played their small town bigoted Sheriff Department characters so well that the viewer hates then loves them. The quality of the acting and the directing can be seen from the get go.

Once again, without giving too much more away, this is a must see film that has also received a 5 out of 5.

Short & Sweet Movie Reviews – GET OUT

Short & Sweet Movie Reviews
by Ché Zuro

What a shock of a movie!

DO NOT turn it off because you think this is going to be a cute romantic chick flick or a film that mimics “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner.” It is neither.

This is a tough film to review because the plot should not be spoiled! Watching without knowing much about the story line is the BEST way to watch this film! (If you like surprises and know nothing about this film and want to see it, DO NOT READ the rest of my review!)

This DOES start out as a romantic comedy of sorts but suddenly changes into something so out of the ordinary, you cannot even fathom what is actually happening!

Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) takes her boyfriend Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) home to meet her parents for a weekend at their secluded estate in the woods; she’s white he’s black. It goes from cute and funny to questionable and disturbing to even more disturbing and then scary and horrific.

The acting was incredible.

Daniel Kaluuya plays the wonderful, funny, kind, generous, loving boyfriend, easy going, yet a little leery of meeting her parents. Allison Williams is the doting girlfriend who wants to spend her life with her man. The entire cast was stupendous in this film, including Catherine Keener and Bradley Whitford playing the all-inclusive, well educated, liberal parents of Rose, who take Chris into their family immediately. From then on, this becomes a horror film.

The story line was completely unique, the directing amazing. Writer and director of this film, Jordan Peele, is up for nominations in Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay in this year’s Oscars. Well deserved.

This is a MUST SEE and I have rated it 5 out of 5!

Everyone Wins with Distinctive Assets During Oscar Season!

“A great gift has nothing to do with the retail value!”–Distinctive Assets founder Lash Fary

The Oscars – Noms, Nods & Odds

By Susan Bredau, THT Flacker (The Hollywood Times) 2/23/2018 – When I was a kid, I spent most of my Saturdays at the movies.  These magical afternoons consisted of coming attractions, a cartoon, and 2 movies! The double-feature ruled. The same “coming attractions”, now known as trailers, were played regardless of the audience in the theater, and there was no rating system to protect us from unsavory subject matter.

When I think about this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Picture, I can only imagine being able to see a double feature of “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk” on the big screen, if only for the sake of days gone by.

I have a good feeling about the 90th Academy Awards® Show this year. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host and three-time Oscar-nominated Michael De Luca and Emmy®-nominated producer Jennifer Todd, who produced the Oscars last year return to helm this year’s production, which airs LIVE on Sunday, March 4th on ABC.

You can replay Kimmel’s monologue about the Oscar nominations which aired on Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel on nomination day – Here’s the clip!

I’m happy to see the diversity among the nominees this year, which was conspicuously absent in the 2017 slate. I will be disappointed if the Oscar Red Carpet caters to and succumbs to a cause marketing platform, as we’ve seen with some other award shows this year.

The Oscar’s Nominee Luncheon, the annual celebratory mixer for the nominees in all categories was held February 5 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. 90th Oscar's Luncheon Class Photo

A complete list of nominees is available at http://oscar.go.com, along with trailers and an Oscar Challenge.

Celebrating the Oscars is still a time-honored Hollywood tradition, complete with countless private viewing parties and Oscar pools to make it interesting. Have you picked your favorites yet? Do you like playing long shots, hunches, or do you go with the odds-on favorites? Yes, the experts have weighed in on the race for this year’s golden statues. Find out who has the odds in their favor!

The Toscars 2018 date has been announced

The red carpet is ready, the paparazzi are prepping their lenses, the stunning dresses are being chosen, and the golden awards are ready to be handed out to the lucky winners. Yes, it’s time again for the Toscars ceremony. No, that’s not a misprint. The Oscars are being held in March, but a few days before that on February 28th, Brits in LA’s 11th annual Toscars will be held in Hollywood at the Renberg Theatre.

This affectionate, spoofy homage is based around this year’s Oscar nominations for best movie. After the Oscar nominations are announced, in three weeks, parodies are made, judged by the Whacademy and then shown at the awards ceremony.

It has been said of this annual event that it is “like the Oscars, only funnier.”

Past presenters and hosts have included Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale), Academy and Golden Globe nominee Eric Roberts, Alex Newell (Glee), Candis Cayne (Dirty Sexy Money), Craig Young (The Last Ship), Jai Rodriquez (Queer Eye), Brianna Brown (Dynasty), Asian Oscar winner Bai Ling, Sean Maguire (Once Upon a Time), DJ Paul Oakenfold, Academy Award Winners, Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Dynasty), Ruth Connell (Supernatural), Luke Evans (Dracula Untold), Rex Lee (Young and Hungry), Janina Gavankar (Sleepy Hollow), Emmy Winner Bruce Vilanch, Brit Award Winner Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama), Bradley Walsh (Law & Order: UK) and the BAFTA winning comedian Jim Tavaré.

Who will take home the coveted ‘Golden Fist’ for Best Whactress, Best Whactor, Best Scribbler, Best Tunes and more? All will be revealed on February 28th.
