Journey of a writer

Sometimes the modern life of a writer involves deleted stories in error or hitting the send key too quick. I am Lorraine Christina Chambers, The Dubliners Daughter, a foreign born Irish born in Toronto who emigrated at a year old to Southern California. I am editor of TheHollywoodTimes.net  and I have been to Ireland ten times with two visits of a month each last year. This morning I was submitting a story to the Irish Times yet my older iPad was too full and it wouldn’t let me save a copy to email so I ‘thought’ I could save it to a private WordPress file. Good intentions gone awry. I accidentally hit published yet maybe it was a guardian angel giving me a nudge to ‘write it down’ as Irish comedian Hal Roach would say.

I have had a rich life of diverse work experiences both in LA and the OC. In my 20s I was a fit model for Hang Ten Jrs sportswear while working at their in house ad agency. I was dating a rock musician who became my husband of 17 years and the father of my two children. In Hollywood, I worked at several ad agencies and a graphic design studio with in between job times as a commercial and film extra. I worked at Virgin Merchandising International with Virgin Records artists as well as emerging metal bands like Megadeth.

As a young mother I went back to work afternoons at the Film Rating Board in Sherman Oaks. In the late 80s we moved to live and study at UC Irvine where I studied Irish Literature with Australian author Thomas Keneally famous for his book Schindler’s List. I had two radio shows in 2008/9 at KUCI 88.9 FM – Record Store Memories and the Emeraldwaves Radio Program featuring music from Ireland and Irish Music from Around the World. My Record Store Memories show got pulled due to an interview guest insisting that I play his first record he brought which was ‘Anna’ by The Beatles which was against the station’s policy of playing Top Billboard 200 artist. Read more about my Record Store memories at OCWeekly.com in my article ‘Memories of an former OC Tower Records Employee’.

I am an occasional late Sunday mass church lecturer in Newport Beach, an emerging Geeks Who Drink trivia pub quizmaster in training and an open mic stand up comic. I own several musical instruments like guitars, ukuleles, harmonica, African drum, Irish bodran and electric keyboards yet a master of none.

I get sidetracked easily with writing, reading and listening to music when I am not working or helping others. My half written book Rock N Roll Resilence – The Universal Power of Music is earmarked for Rocktober 2018 before the second anniversary of my 30th birthday.

I am just rediscovering my sanity after a grueling four years from 2012-2016 as a shared caregiver to my aging Dublin Mom who went to Heaven in October 2016 just 14 months after my middle brother Marcus Patrick abruptly ended his pain of addictions and back pain in July 2015. I am compiling a book with Marc’s 100 pages of his writings during his several rehab stays. The book is entitled ‘Our Quiet Man’s Secret Dilemma’ which I plan to travel and speak to recovery groups and students about the hardships of silence and strife. I am working on an article for the Irish Times which will be the cornerstone of my book ‘Edges of Ireland – stories of the FBI/foreign born Irish’.

I am so grateful to senior writer Valerie Milano who has been the rock of TheHollywoodTimes.net in so many ways. I am at times the absentee masthead to this imaginary ship of various writers adrift in the sea of press release requests, deadlines, mutiny on the bounty renegades and various entertaining scenarios behind the scenes. Yet we write on as writing matters. Stories are vehicles of interest, education and discovery. They are not always perfect and some of our emerging writers need helping hands and editing. We all had to start somewhere.

Tower Records Founder Russ Solomon R.I.P.

All good things must come to a past and while watching the Academy Awards with a drink of whiskey, the founding father of Tower Records had a massive heart attack and died. Another historic day of when the music died again for many of us Tower Records employees and fans of Russ Solomon. I never met Russ but I worked for him at the Costa Mesa location of Tower Records in a former skating rink at the narrow strange plot of land by a Del Taco by 17th Street and Newport Blvd. en route to the Balboa Peninsula. It was a store where one could be themselves, tattoos and all. One time a customer said to me, ‘where is your tattoo? I replied, ‘Not where you can see it’ To which he exclaimed, ‘Everyday is Halloween at Tower’. Actually everyday was Record Store day at Tower.

I have met and worked with so many ex music store friends who personally knew Russ as they were music buyers for labels and bands or former Tower employees.. I found out on Facebook today about Russ Solomon’s passing by my former boss from my Super D music distribution company, Lauren Watt, who announced her sadness in a post about his death. This man’s love of music gave so many music lovers a place to work and a place for music fans to get music. Yet it was so much more. Tower Records was a community center of sorts. One could get tickets for music and sport events through Ticketmaster at the Tower locations. We did Saturday morning on sales at 9am for just released concerts. It was a rite of passage to be in a cue with a coveted wristband to get the best spot in line for your favorite band’s upcoming show that could sell out in minutes. The Tower Records staff was all about customer service and we knew how to expedite the lines to quickly get as many people tickets as possible.

Russ grew an empire from simple origins of selling some records in a display at a Sacramento pharmacy. Ironically when the record store bankruptcy happened in 2006 right before Christmas, the Great American Group was buying up the stores not to preserve them but to obtain properties for future Walgreens Pharmacy locations. It must have been hard for Russ to see his dream diminish but oh what a wonderful journey it had spun.

Colin Hanks made a high fidelity spin of the early Tower Records origins with his rockumentary movie All Things Must Pass where the famous Sunset Strip Tower Records was resurrected in its glory for an after party for the film screening. I remember that location so well when I lived in North Hollywood while married to a bassist and he played the clubs on the strip. If there was a parking space available in the tiny lot, one had to stop and go in the record store. It is like seeing a short line at the Donut Man in Glendora, or a short line at In N Out Burger, you gotta stop. Being at the Sunset Store was a very crowded shop of rows and rows of boxes of the latest releases. One couldn’t leave empty handed. All these memories become of one dreamer who dared. Thank you Russ. Please create good vibrations in Rock N Roll Heaven by opening up a music shop of sorts. The music tribe is waiting for you with open arms. A music angel is home to rest.

Baby Driver movie

Short and Sweet Movie Reviews   –  Ché Zuro

Baby Driver

Knowing nothing about this film when I chose to watch it, it was an amazingly wonderful surprise! This major action crime film has music as it’s “driving” force.

Written and directed by Edgar Wright, the central character, Baby (Ansel Elgort, son of fashion photographer Arthur Elgort), is a music lover who is coerced to work as a getaway driver for a kingpin (Kevin Spacey). The film features choreography in which the actors’ actions synchronize with its soundtrack. (And what a soundtrack! More on that later!)

The acting is SO good in this film, that I got lost in each character, including bassist Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) appearing as thug Eddie “No Nose!” Jamie Fox’s character in the film was both exciting and frightening, as this is someone we are not used to seeing him play. And he played it well. The cast worked so well together – I loved Jon Hamm playing a sexy bad guy.

If you like action, cops and robbers, justice, and great music, you have to see this. It has you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, wondering what will happen next! The twists and turns are of the unusual kind, which makes for the best films. This is one of the top unique films I have seen this season!

The soundtrack of this film was also amazing, probably some of the best music I have heard in all the films that I’ve watched for awards season. Going from old soul R&B to rap to reggae to country and classic rock music, it, and Baby, are the driving force of this film. Baby’s collection of iPods for different scenarios was a brilliant way to pair music with a film. From his romantic music when he is with a girlfriend to the heavy tunes while driving the getaway car, one will appreciate every single tune in this film.

Unfortunately in the fallout of accusations of sexual misconduct by so many in Hollywood, this film will probably not receive the accolades it deserves, due to one of the lead characters appearing in the list of abusers.

Despite that, I highly recommend this film. I gave it a 4.5 !

Hostiles – movie review

Short and Sweet Movie Reviews – Ché Zuro (Feb. 10, 2018)

Hostiles

Hostiles is in the top five of all the films I’ve seen the season, even though it was just released in January of this year. It follows a U.S. Cavalry officer (Christian Bale) who must escort a Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to their home in Montana in 1892.   Although it is a typical Cowboys and Indians story, it has historical content about a more remote military outpost in the late 1800’s, Fort Berringer, New Mexico, which holds Apache, Cheyenne and more Native American tribe members prisoner, all while Comanche tribes raid white settlements in the area. Rosalie Quaid (Rosamund Pike) survives one of these raids and is found by a group of American soldiers and brought back to the Fort where she heals from her wounds and then sets out to go back east with the group escorting Yellow Hawk to his homeland. This is just one of many movies this season that is based on history and the violent beginning and continuation of that in our country.

Written and directed by Scott Cooper, one forgets that Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike are not American actors, while watching their complete involvement in who they were portraying and where they were in history. I got lost in their tough way of living, what they had to survive out in the west, and how each character had things to overcome each day. The brilliance of the directing and acting in this film are obvious from the get go.

The cinematography is also incredible: the lighting and camera work is at its best in this film with sweeping landscapes, but also with the heart wrenching murders and treatment of fellow man on both sides of the coin. The locations were stunning in every single shot.  Although this was one of my favorite films, it hurt my heart watching it, learning the truth of what happened in the 1800s in the western part of the new United States. Eradication of the Indian tribes and the way that the white people treated natives and other people of color, was difficult to stomach, and still is today.

Anyone that is into American history or who loves westerns this is a must-see.

This film is rated 5 on a 0-5 rating scale.

NAMM RECAP – BAE Audio and UK Sound

Audio and UK Sound Roll Into NAMM 2018 with Several New Products

BAE 73L EQ, Tonestack pedal and UK Sound’s FET compressor /1073 product line are among new product entries — in addition to Recently Launched BAE R53 and PDIS

Anaheim, CA – January 17, 2018 – BAE Audio [Booth 15917, Anaheim Convention Center], a manufacturer of premium analog hardware built to vintage specifications, had their debut of two exciting new product at this year’s NAMM show: the 73L 500 series EQ and the Tonestack guitar pedal. Also on view was the recently launched R53 horizontal 500 series rack and PDIS stereo direct injection box. The range of BAE products will be joined by offerings from BAE Audio subsidiary UK Sound, including products based on classic FET compressors and the 1073 preamp and EQ.

“We’ve got quite a lot of new gear to show off at NAMM this year, including many new products from UK Sound — our new subsidiary that offers premium analog gear at an affordable price,” says BAE Audio and UK Sound CEO Mark Loughman. “We’re maintaining our commitment to high quality components and classic designs with all of our recently launched and upcoming BAE Audio products, as UK Sound advances its mission to provide studio-quality products at an accessible price point with several new product entries.”

Rack ’em up with BAE Audio

BAE Audio showcased a brand new EQ for the 500 series: the 73L. This versatile and musical sound-shaping hardware borrows the design of the EQ section of the classic 1073 console preamp and EQ and fits it into a single lunchbox rackspace. The 73L is also the perfect complement to the recently launched R53 three-space horizontal rack, also on view at the BAE booth.

Following the success of its first guitar pedal, the Hot Fuzz, BAE Audio will debut its next offering for vintage stompbox enthusiasts at NAMM 2018: the Tonestack. This brand new dual-stomp pedal is based on classic a ‘70s silicon fuzz circuit known for its crisp and buzzy overdrive, recognizable from many well-known records of the period. It features unique tone controls for improved tweakability.

At this year’s NAMM show, BAE Audio showcased its popular new PDI and PDIS direct injection boxes at its booth. The single and dual channel DIs feature an OEP/Carnhill transformer for a smooth analog sound and rugged solid steel chassis to ensure durable on stage or in the studio.

UK Sound: cut from the same cloth

UK Sound introduced its first product, the 1173 preamp and compressor, at last year’s NAMM show. This year’s convention showcased with several new products that round out its line of quality, cost-effective studio gear. The 176 and 276 compressors are UK Sound’s new single and dual-channel FET compressors, making a high-quality version of this studio staple more accessible than ever.

Mirroring its parent company’s ability to translate classic designs to formats that meet every user’s needs, UK Sound will introduce a line of preamps and equalizers based on the classic 1073 preamp and equalizer. These include a flagship rack version of the preamp and EQ, as well as single and dual-channel standalone and 500 series iterations of the preamplifier section alone.

Johnny Fox – sword swallower magician RIP Dec. 4th, 2017

By Jolly Goodfellow – Traveling Aussie International Festival Performer

My dear friend Johnny Fox, world renown sword swallower, slight of hand magician, street & stage performer, all round wonderful human being passed away, December 4th. There will be a Celebration of his Life in Annapolis, Maryland at the Performing Arts Centre, 6th January 2018.

Really sad he’s no longer with us. Truly one of a kind! Heavy hearted that Johnny Fox has left this world. He was a genuine humane person, wise, caring, witty, a strong spirited one of a kind being and truly great showman. The performing and festival community has lost one of it’s greats. He had a special energy with people on and off stage, good company to be around. His enthusiam, gratitude, optimism and love for life were truly admirable. He brought a lot of happiness and love to people. I’m guttered he’s gone. One of the bright lights has gone out. The world needs more love and light!

Johnny was the one who made me conscious of Amma. We traveled together from the Colorado Renaissance Festival to Alberqueie, New Mexico in 2013 to see her. It took about fifteen hours or longer to get a hug. She’s hugged over 40 million people. Johnny wanted to stay until the very end, the closing prayers celebration where Amma sprinkles flowers. Johnny had so much energy all the way through, he was radiating from all the love. We must have been there for twenty four hours or so? Serendipitous Johnny & Amma were only a few weeks apart in age, both sixty four years old. After seeing Amma we went to Santa Fe, and then back to the Ren Faire in Colarado. Johnny got me onto the Colorado, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Connecticut Renaissance Faires.

He messaged me out of the blue in 2012 when i was in Europe, and said he’d love to meet me. We’d heard about each other via performers.net over the years. When we finally met in June, 2013 we had a kindred connection in spirit. Shared some great times together, had cosmic philosophical yarns for hours on end. Loved his gorgeous little dog Isabel. Such a sweet little soul. She meant the world to Johnny. The way he looked after Isabel was a reflection what a loyal great person Johnny was.

I loved the hummingbirds that would visit Johnny’s place at the Colorado Ren Faire. He had a hummingbird feeder on the balcony rail. We traveled to Boulder in Colorado together and Johnny showed me the house where Robin Williams (Mork & Mindy) was filmed. I went to the circus school and Johnny showed me the pitch where he used to busk for years in Boulder. We stayed up many late nights having chats in his old 1957 bus which was ambiently decorated at the Maryland Renaissance Faire. I traveled later in the year in 2013 to Connecticut and stayed at Johnny’s place, and he showed me many artifacts from his Freakatorium museum when he used to live in New York. Some really unique items, Johnny had the gift of the gab.

A true authentic showman. Had great times hanging out with Johnny and his friends at the Ren Faires and his girlfriend Andrea. We went tire tube rafting down the Apple Valley River in Lyons, Colorado. The rapids were so fast my tire capsized, went arse over head, got tangled up in some branches, and Johnny was laughing because he saved my hat. There were numerous good stories. Now Johnny is gone, it’s really sunk in. Sometimes it’s overwhelming living in such a huge mechanistic city, one can lose touch with reality, feeling a bit disconnected, swamped in keeping afloat on a neverending concrete jungle treadmill. Where does the time go? I don’t know… Keeping balanced… Love is the best at doing that! Like Johnny says… ‘Love is all we have’ He was a gifted channeler.

I was impressed when I saw him perform on stage at the Magic Castle in Hollywood last year. It was his first time doing the Castle, but ‘Wow’… He did it with such ease, he nailed it with true comedic showmanship. His stage shows were great at the Ren Faires, so was wondering how it would translate on the main stage at the Magic Castle in such a slick setting, but Johnny stormed it to full houses. After the show, Johnny showed me around the castle. He even pointed out a framed picture of his friend Johnny Calvert (world renown magician for eight decades). I heard Johnny talking to Johnny Calvert on the phone for ages once, on our way to New Mexico. Was kind of Johnny to invite me to his show as i had never been to the Castle before. He invited me back to where he was staying, Castle residence apartment, and we talked for hours, and said I can stay, so I did. The last time I saw Johnny was after seeing his show at the Castle again earlier this year.

He performed at Maryland Renaissance Faire for 37 yrs. There was a stage named after him, also the main stage of the festival was renamed after him last year. He performed the entire festival last year with his health condition. Very brave man full of compassion.

Consumer Beware – fraud never is really on holiday

2017 is winding down and a lot of people are looking at the new year for renewed hope to reinvent themselves and their businesses. It is a time to clear up neglected issues to start fresh with a new year. Yet what lurks behind seemingly trusting smiling ads  and pitches for coaching careers, book publishing packages, expensive retreats and more are just society’s latest version of expensive lessons and regret for many vulnerable people duped out of their hard earned money to pay for unrealistic setups.

Local TV channels welcome consumers to report their issues for them to expose the fraud and deceit. Unfortunately geniune programs suffer from the misfits of those who prey on the emotional purchases of the new career seekers. This past year a chain of beauty schools misused college tuition funds thus closing up all their schools leaving beauty school clients without their accomplished careers.

It is the Buyer Beware syndrome. With social media, potential clients get lured into being ‘friends’ with the product group. Nowadays with Live recordings, company CEOs are streaming personal client personal stories as if they were having a confidential beer poolside with coherts.

Independent business owners are seeking services in the new landscape of technology and websites yet getting delays and unfullfilled promises.

TheHollywoodTimes is looking to close out another year in anticipation of a new year with more investigative stories. We welcome more writers and stories to show the glory and the grime along the virtual Hollywood Blvd. in the world. Lets be good humans no matter what time of the year it is. Integrity doesn’t take a holiday so be on your guard and watch your wallet.

Montclair, NJ  (November 2, 2017)  – One of the most successful songwriters and composers of the last 25 years, Steve Dorff has penned over 20 Top 10 hits for pop and country artists around the world, including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Blake Shelton, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, Anne Murray, Whitney Houston, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Judy Collins, Cher, Dusty Springfield, Ringo Starr, and Garth Brooks. He has scored for television shows, including Growing Pains, Murphy Brown, Murder She Wrote, and Reba, and several films, such as Any Which Way but Loose, for which he penned the titular song.

Steve has now written his next hit, I Wrote That One, Too… A Life in Songwriting from Willie to Whitney (Backbeat Books Hardcover; November 1, 2017; $29.99), a memoir recounting his remarkable journey filled with amazing successes, happy accidents in the studio, incredible friendships, tremendous creative satisfaction, and sometimes just plain being at the right place at the right time with the right song in hand. He writes:

“I truly have loved being that ‘behind-the-scenes’ guy, maintaining my anonymity, and being able to walk past the obnoxious Paparazzi at great restaurants without them giving me a second glance. In my opinion, being a songwriter who has had a successful career and doing what he is passionate about, is an award in itself.”

The book follows Steve from his childhood in Queens to Manhattan to Nashville to his eventual arrival in Los Angeles. Steve shares anecdotes, advice, and insights into his phenomenal career and recounts his experiences and sometimes-hilarious behind-the-scenes stories with the many famous singers, musicians, producers, and lyric writers with whom he has collaborated. He also gets personal and shares what he has learned about strength, courage, perseverance, and unconditional love from three important women in his life: his first wife and his mother-who passed away within a few months of each other-and his big sister, who died in May 2016.

Full of heartfelt stories, hard-earned wisdom, and delightful wit, I Wrote That One, Too… is a great read for musicians, music fans, and whoever has chased a dream and survived the surprising but often serendipitous turns in the road.

#NationalAuthorsDay – the early writers in our lives

By Emeraldlorraine

November 1st is the #DayOfTheDead, the #DayAfterHalloween and #NationalAuthorsDay. Yes there is a special day for writers. It is fitting that it is on #DiaDeLosMuertos also known as #AllSaintsDay. Writers are often tortured souls like saints who dig deep inside their soul to final write down their personal thoughts as well as stories of others.

Per Wikipedia – ‘The idea of setting aside a day to celebrate American authors came from Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, president of the Bement (Illinois) Women’s Club in 1928. McPherson was a teacher and an avid reader throughout her life. During World War I, when she was recuperating in a hospital, she wrote a fan letter to fiction writer Irving Bacheller, telling him how much she had enjoyed his story, “Eben Holden’s Last Day A’Fishin.” Bacheller sent her an autographed copy of another story, and McPherson realized that she could never adequately thank him for his gift. Instead, she showed her appreciation by submitting an idea for a National Author’s Day to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which passed a resolution setting aside November 1 as a day to honor American writers. In 1949 the day was recognized by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Sue Cole, McPherson’s granddaughter, was largely responsible for promoting the observation of National Author’s Day after her grandmother’s death in 1968. She has urged people to write a note to their favorite author on this day to “brighten up the sometimes lonely business of being a writer.” Flying the American flag on November 1, according to Mrs. Cole, is another way of showing appreciation for the men and women who have created American literature.’

So here at #THT  #TheHollywoodTimesNet we support this gallant day for those of us who face that blank page with determination and hope.

NAMM 2018 Show Expansion news

The 2018 NAMM Show, the global crossroads of the music products, pro audio and sound, and event technology industries, will offer exhibitors and attendees the largest expanded campus in the show’s history when the doors open January 25-28, 2018 in Anaheim, California.

The Show, which annually gathers over 100,000 attendees from 139 countries and regions, will take on a new look in the form of communities across the show floor, including expanded event technology and pro audio areas; the addition of a new building, Anaheim Convention Center North (ACC North); as well as a new education and professional development campus, curated by a variety of industry leading experts in their respective fields.

Just released, The 2018 NAMM Show map represents the diverse crossroads of industry in both buildings of the convention center, and offers a platform for the product communities of stringed instruments, school band and orchestra, fretted instruments (acoustic and electric), percussion, keys (pianos, keyboards and synthesizers), pro audio and sound, stage and lighting, as well as distributors, publishers, retail services and more.

Access the map here: https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2018/map

Highlights of The 2018 NAMM Show communities include:
Event Technology: A new area of the show will be transformed into an environment ideal for showcasing lighting, rigging, DJ, sound, special effects and staging products and services in a completely controlled atmosphere. Professionals in this space will be able to test-drive new products on the spot and engage in one-on-one conversations with leading experts and buyers.

Pro Audio and Sound: Visitors across the show floor will find products in both pro audio and live sound format.

Innovations and new product launches in recording, live sound, installation, A/V, broadcast, and post-production, along with consumer electronics, software, DJ, and technology will round out the experience, all set in a business-focused environment.

Fretted Instruments: Fretted instruments, from ukuleles, mandolins to handcrafted boutique guitars and electric guitars, basses, and more, will be found on all levels of the convention center. Attendees and buyers alike will have the opportunity to directly connect with exhibitors throughout these dedicated communities.

Percussion: Cymbals, kits and all kinds of percussion accessories will be located and placed near demo areas so attendees can experience the true sound of the instruments in a quieter area away from the show floor.

Pianos: Piano brands from around-the-world will have their own dedicated showcase – a gallery conducive to playing and delving into the artistry and nuances of each instrument.

School Band and Orchestra/Stringed Instruments: Horns, brass, woodwinds as well as stringed instruments and bow exhibitors will appreciate the spacious area that houses SBO, as well as its proximity to all areas in the convention center.

MI/Pro Audio Distributors & Publishers: An intersection of MI and pro audio distributors, brands, and publishers servicing multiple product types across retail and professional channels will create a hub of activity for those seeking their services.

The growth of the official NAMM campus includes an expansion of NAMM’s education programs, which will be relocated to the Hilton Anaheim. Covering four floors, the new Hilton Anaheim education campus will offer attendees the chance to mix and mingle between professional development disciplines and opportunities to enhance careers and grow their businesses and knowledge.

Announced earlier this year, pro audio and sound professionals can take advantage of education from the Audio Engineering Society’s new format: AES@NAMM Prosound Symposium: Live and Studio. Event tech education, in the areas of lighting, stage and production will be among the themes in a robust schedule curated by Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA) and experts from Lighting and Sound America, Stage Directions, Front of House, Projection Lighting and Staging News magazines. TEC Tracks, which offers free education for emerging pro audio professionals, will also be found in the Hilton.

The NAMM Idea Center will remain in the lobby of the Anaheim Convention Center. Badge registration for non-NAMM members opened on August 30.

Schedules for all educational sessions will be announced in the coming months.

In the evening, The NAMM Show will offer plenty of networking opportunities, including the new-to-NAMM Parnelli Awards (Friday, January 26), honoring pioneering, influential professionals and companies and their contributions to the live production industry.

This year’s event will recognize Billy Joel’s long-time Production Manager, Bobby “Boomer” Thrasher, as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Lighting designer and innovator, Jonathan Smeeton (The Rolling Stones, Marilyn Manson, Jane’s Addiction, Taylor Swift), will receive the Parnelli Visionary Award; and DiGiCo technical director John Stadius will be honored with the Audio Innovator Award.

Other events to be held over the course of the show include the pro audio and sound recording favorite NAMM TEC Awards (Saturday, January 27), concerts on The Grand Plaza Stage, and a myriad of other interactive events and opportunities.

‘Magnum Opus’ national security thriller

National security thriller “Magnum Opus” will be screened for the first time at Laemmle’s Royal Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. The film released on VOD and DVD in November 2017. Gravitas Ventures administers distribution domestically, while Screen Media International handles international sales, and they will continue to present the film to foreign buyers at MIPCOM and AFM.

With the tagline, “Truth, Justice and Other Casualties of War,” the film’s plot explores of-the-minute political and national security issues, centering on the struggle between liberty and our need to be protected from our enemies.

While providing subtle commentary about how the news media influences the perception of factual events, the film makes abundant references to the U.S. government spying on citizens and U.S. officials lying to win an election. Additional allusions to Edward Snowden and the suggestion of WikiLeaks-style activism give a realistic, “ripped-from-the-headlines” credence to the premise.

“Magnum Opus” marks the debut of director Kevin Elliott and screenwriter Scott Stoddard and was filmed by award-winning cinematographer Bobby Lam (“Best Cinematography – Narrative Feature” for “A Leading Man” at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival). Newcomer Amanda Upson and TV and film production veteran Marc Newland serve as producers.

It stars Louise Griffiths as Monica Davenport (“Unknown Caller,” “The Revenant,” “Chastity Bites”), Adam J. Harrington as Daniel Cliff (“TURN: Washington’s Spies,” “CSI,” “Training Day,” “NCIS: Los Angeles”), Clark Johnson as Robert Cochran (“The Wire,” “Alpha House”) and Pej Vahdat as Sean Dabashi (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” “Bones,” “Shameless,” “Sneaky Pete”). Norm Lewis will appear as Charlie Lutwidge (“Scandal,” 2012 Tony Award-nominated actor for his lead role in “Porgy and Bess”) and Dustin Ingram as Private Sattler (Martin Scorsese’s HBO series “Rock and Roll,” “Paranormal Activity 3”).

In addition, the film features the signature “Oilgraph” paintings by artist Kevin Rolly and a score by composer Erik Aho, 2013 recipient of the ASCAP Foundation’s David Rose Award, whose film and TV credits include originalmusic for “The Amazing Race” (ABC) and “The Bachelor” (CBS).
